Product Description
I have always dreamed of being a beekeeper someday when I’m settled down and have laid my roots somewhere. Bees are one of the most vital parts of our ecosystem; without them we would be without food. In honor of the hard work bees do for us, I created this pattern featuring a delicate honeycomb design and a bright pop of yellow — dyed naturally using just turmeric! I hope these socks bring you as much happiness as they have brought me.
CONSTRUCTION The Honeycomb Socks are knit toe-up using the Turkish Cast On, feature a Fleegle Heel, and an optional Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 6 (7, 8, 9) inch circumference Recommended 0.5-1” negative ease in circumference.
MATERIALS 1 skein of Honeybee fingering weight yarn by Cable Me Cozy, or preferred fingering weight yarn. A 100g/400 yard skein is plenty.
GAUGE 32 stitches and 40 rows per 4" stockinette in the round. Adjust needle size to obtain correct gauge if needed.
Honeycomb Socks by Cable Me Cozy
What is Being Made
Honeycomb Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks featuring a delicate honeycomb design inspired by beekeeping. The pattern includes a bright pop of yellow color, naturally dyed using turmeric. This intermediate-level knitting project celebrates the vital role bees play in our ecosystem while creating a cozy, wearable garment.
Sizing and Fit
The pattern is available in four size ranges: sizes 1–4 and sizes 6–9, accommodating foot circumferences from approximately 1 inch to 9 inches. The designer recommends working with 0.5–1 inch of negative ease in circumference for an optimal fit. Detailed notes are included in the pattern to assist knitters in selecting the most appropriate size for their measurements.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques to create the honeycomb texture and structure:
- Stockinette Stitch — forms the foundation of the sock fabric
- Cable Work — creates the distinctive honeycomb design that gives these socks their visual interest and name
- Magic Loop Method — the pattern is specifically written for the magic loop technique, allowing knitters to work in the round on a single circular needle
The honeycomb motif is achieved through cable techniques, which involve crossing groups of stitches over one another to create raised, interlocking patterns that visually resemble the geometric structure of a honeycomb.
Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for Cable Me Cozy fingering weight yarn in the "Honeybee" colorway, requiring 400 yards per 100 grams. Any fingering weight sock yarn of comparable yardage and weight can be substituted. Knitters will need US size 1 (2.25mm) needles or the size required to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern is designed for the magic loop method, making a single circular needle the primary tool.
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 40 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in sock knitting where circumference directly impacts wearability. Additional notions required include scissors, a removable stitch marker, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and a cable needle or double-pointed needle for managing cable stitches.
Design Inspiration
Designer Rebecca Oliver created this pattern as a tribute to beekeeping and the ecological importance of bees. The natural turmeric dyeing of the yarn adds an artisanal touch while reinforcing the bee-themed aesthetic. The combination of the honeycomb cable pattern and the warm yellow colorway creates a finished sock that is both visually striking and thematically cohesive.
