Product Description
Blanket using filet crochet technique with a puff stitch border. The idea for this design started off when I was making cushion covers and working out how to join hexagons together to make a square shaped panel. When I played around with the templates it dawned on me that by spacing the hexagons apart it would create a diamond pattern in between the hexies. Use as many or as few colours as you like. I went for a solid mustard colour with cream for the border. My wonderful pattern testers used a variety colours to create a pretty striped effect. The pattern is written to make a blanket measuring 34x40 inches using aran/worsted weight yarn with a 6mm hook. You could use any yarn and hook size you like. I've included simple instructions on how to adapt the sizing. Have fun and get creative with it, the pattern would also make a lovely cushion cover by making 2 small panels and join using the same border. Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket by Hello Moon Crochet
What is Being Made
The Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket is a crochet throw designed to measure 34 by 40 inches when completed. This intermediate-level project creates a textured blanket featuring a distinctive honeycomb diamond pattern throughout, finished with a decorative border incorporating puff stitches for added visual interest and dimension.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques to achieve its honeycomb texture and diamond motif. The blanket utilizes a repeating stitch pattern that forms geometric diamond shapes across the fabric. The border features puff stitches, which are decorative raised stitches that create a three-dimensional effect. The pattern is worked in rows, with a turning chain at the beginning of each row to maintain consistent edge tension. Colour changes are incorporated strategically—the designer used a solid mustard base with cream accents in the final border row to emphasize the puff stitch detail, though crafters can experiment with multiple colours or create striped effects by changing yarn after completing blocks of seven rows.
Stitches Used
- Puff stitches (featured in the border)
- Chain stitches (including turning chains)
- Additional stitches as detailed in the pattern chart and abbreviations provided in the PDF
Materials Required
This blanket requires approximately 525 grams of aran weight yarn in total. The designer, Hayley Hall, used WI soft and smooth aran yarn, specifically 450 grams in mustard and 75 grams in cream for colour contrast. A 6mm crochet hook is recommended for aran weight yarn. The pattern is flexible regarding yarn choice—crafters may substitute any yarn type by adjusting the hook size accordingly to achieve the correct tension and fabric drape.
Pattern Customization
The Honeycomb Diamonds Blanket pattern offers flexibility for customization. The starting chain can be adjusted in any multiple of 12 plus 1 to modify the blanket's finished dimensions. Colour options range from solid single-colour designs to multi-colour variations, with striped effects achievable by changing colours after completing seven-row blocks. Pattern testers created blankets in a variety of colour combinations, demonstrating the design's versatility.
Pattern Format
This pattern is written in UK crochet terms and includes a chart overview of the pattern repeat on page 2, along with comprehensive notes and abbreviations to guide crafters through the project.
