Product Description
HONEY has button and thread jointed arm and legs. The body and head are knitted in one continuous piece. I wanted to design a bear with as few parts as possible and HONEY is the result.
You will be knitting with 2 strands of yarn together, one a plain double knit and the other a textured yarn. HONEY will be firm and yet lovely to cuddle.
Filling is the key to a wonderful soft toy, take extra time and the result will be worth all the effort.
Honey Bear Knitted Toy
What is Being Made
Honey Bear is a knitted stuffed toy designed by SUSAN J WARD, measuring approximately 15 inches (38 centimeters) in height. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a cuddly bear toy that can be customized through yarn selection. The pattern allows crafters to produce three distinct bear variations: a Grey Eyelash Yarn Bear, a Cream Coral Yarn Bear, and a Pink Cupcake Yarn Bear. Each bear is constructed using identical knitting techniques, with the final appearance determined by the specific yarn chosen for the project.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Honey Bear pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for toy construction. The pattern utilizes increases created by knitting into the front and back of the same stitch to shape the bear's body and features. Decreases are worked by knitting stitches together to reduce stitch counts and form tapered sections. The designer notes that tension is not critically important for toy projects, allowing crafters flexibility in their knitting. However, avoiding excessively gappy stitches is recommended to achieve better results when stuffing the toy with fibre fill. Crafters are advised to adjust needle sizes based on their natural tension: moving up a needle size if stitches feel tight, or down a size if stitches appear loose. This flexibility means the final bear size may vary slightly depending on individual tension and needle adjustments.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure in this pattern is stocking stitch (also written as st st), which is created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side. This classic stitch creates a smooth, finished appearance ideal for stuffed toys. The pattern instructions incorporate standard abbreviations including K for knit, P for purl, inc for increase, dec for decrease, tog for together, alt for alternate, sts for stitches, and RS/WS for right side and wrong side respectively.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Honey Bear pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn. The designer's sample uses 2 strands of yarn worked together, which creates a thicker fabric suitable for toy construction. The pattern was tested using 6mm knitting needles, which produced a gauge of approximately 14 stitches and 18 rows over a 4-inch (10-centimeter) square. Crafters will need fibre fill for stuffing the completed bear toy. The pattern accommodates various yarn types, including eyelash yarn, standard DK weight yarn in solid colors like cream and coral, and specialty yarns such as cupcake yarn, allowing for creative customization of the finished bear's texture and appearance.
