What is Being Made
The Honey Badger Jumper is a warm and vibrant knit sweater designed to bring confidence and comfort to the wearer. Inspired by the fierce and fearless nature of the honey badger, this garment features a striking color contrast between the body and sleeves, accentuating arm length across the chest. The jumper combines simple colourwork on the body with bright, solid-colored sleeves and yoke for visual impact and dynamic styling.
Construction Method
This jumper is knit in the round from the bottom up, creating a seamless garment except at the armpits. The construction begins with the body, which features waist and bust shaping to create a flattering, fitted silhouette. The yoke is constructed using raglan shaping with short rows incorporated to create a comfortable and well-fitted neckline. This top-down approach to the yoke combined with bottom-up body knitting ensures excellent fit and minimal finishing work.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Colourwork: Two-toned colourwork pattern on the body creates visual interest and contrast
- Raglan Shaping: Raglan decreases in the yoke for a classic fitted sleeve cap
- Short Row Shaping: Short rows incorporated into the yoke to create a well-fitted neckline
- Waist and Bust Shaping: Strategic increases and decreases throughout the body for a contoured fit
- Seamless Knitting in the Round: Circular knitting creates a seamless garment with minimal seaming required
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Honey Badger Jumper utilizes fundamental knitting stitches within a structured colourwork design. The two-toned colourwork pattern on the body creates visual depth while the sleeves and yoke are worked in solid color, allowing the stitch definition to shine. The combination of stockinette stitch as the base fabric with colourwork patterning creates a fabric with excellent drape and visual interest.
Materials
This jumper is knit in baby alpaca yarn in a DK weight, which provides a luxuriously soft and comfortable fabric. The yarn weight is ideal for creating a garment with excellent drape and breathability while maintaining warmth. Circular needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are required for working this project in the round.
Difficulty Level
The Honey Badger Jumper is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The combination of colourwork, shaping techniques, and yoke construction requires solid foundational skills in knitting in the round, managing multiple colors, and executing decreases and increases with precision.
