Product Description
Home Again mitts are the companions to Fetching My Boy cowl. The cowl was designed on a journey to collect my little boy from his first no-parents visit with his grandparents, and the mitts were designed once he was home, hence their name. The mitts measure around 6.5" around the palm just above the thumb, to fit an average woman's hand with palm circumference around 7-8". The pattern stitch is quite stretchy. Use about 150 yards of one colour for a classic look or choose contrasting colours for the cuffs and the hand for a fun and funky pair of mitts. You'll need around 90 yards of the main colour and around 60 yards of the contrast colour. Matching cowl (Fetching My Boy) is available.

Home Again Mitts by Kirsten McTeer
What Is Being Made
The Home Again mitts are a pair of knitted fingerless mittens designed by Kirsten McTeer as companion pieces to the Fetching My Boy cowl. These mitts are quick to complete and offer versatility in colorway options, allowing knitters to create them with contrasting cuffs and borders or in a single unified color throughout.
Craft and Project Type
This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some foundational experience. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF format, allowing for convenient access and printing.
Techniques Used
The Home Again mitts employ fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The construction uses the magic loop method or double-pointed needles for working in the round, a common approach for creating seamless cylindrical garments like mittens. The pattern incorporates basic shaping techniques including increases worked using two methods: knit front and back (KFB) and make one (M1) stitches, which allow for gradual expansion of stitches to accommodate the hand and fingers.
Stitches Used
The patterning is constructed using only knit and purl stitches, making these mitts accessible to knitters across various skill levels despite the intermediate project classification. The primary fabric is worked in stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric texture. This straightforward stitch combination means knitters focus on shaping and construction rather than complex colorwork or textured stitch patterns.
Materials and Specifications
The Home Again mitts require the following materials and tools:
- Yarn: 150 yards (137 meters) total of fingering weight yarn, divided into 90 yards (82 meters) in Main Colour and 60 yards (55 meters) in Contrast Colour. Fingering weight yarn is a fine, lightweight yarn suitable for creating garments with excellent drape and detailed stitch definition.
- Needles: 2.5mm (US size 1.5) circular needles measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) for working magic loop method, or alternatively double-pointed needles (DPNs) of the same size
- Notions: Two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, a small stitch holder or waste yarn for securing stitches temporarily, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern specifies a tension of 8 stitches and 11 rows per inch measured over stocking stitch using the recommended 2.5mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished mitts fit correctly and display the intended drape and fabric characteristics. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 44 stitches using contrast color yarn, establishing the cuff foundation for the right mitt.
