Product Description
Hollyhock Scarf’s shape couldn’t be simpler, as it is a big rectangle knitted in stockinette stitch and framed with garter stitch, but all the fun resides in its stitch patterns. It elegantly combines two different Fair Isle patterns, a simple lace stitch and long sections of plain stockinette, perfectly suited for a fun variegated yarn. The pattern calls for 3 colors of fingering weight yarn, and includes instructions to make it as long and as large as you desire, to accommodate your own preferences in size, yarn weight and yardage.
Yarn, Yardage and Dimensions Scarf is adaptable in width and length. Yardage and gauge can vary to fit your preferences.
You will need: 3 colors of fingering weight yarn Color A: 420 yds Color B: 320 yds Color C: 170 yds
The prototype was made using Julie Asselin Leizu Fingering, colorways: Keep Me (A), Ardoise (B), Ale (C). It measures 70” (178 cm) long x 11” (28 cm) wide.

What Is Being Made
The Hollyhock Scarf is a rectangular knitted scarf designed by Gabrielle Vézina. The finished scarf measures 70 inches (178 centimeters) in length and 11 inches (28 centimeters) in width, making it a generous accessory suitable for various styling preferences. The design is specifically engineered to showcase variegated yarn while incorporating multiple stitch techniques for visual interest and texture.
Techniques and Stitch Patterns
This intermediate-level knitting project combines several distinct stitch techniques to create its elegant appearance. The foundation of the scarf is constructed in stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth, classic knitted fabric base. The perimeter is framed with garter stitch, creating a defined border that adds structure and prevents curling at the edges.
The primary design interest comes from the integration of two different Fair Isle wide patterns, a traditional colorwork technique that uses multiple colors within individual rows to create intricate geometric designs. These Fair Isle sections are balanced with a simple lace stitch, which introduces openwork and delicate texture. Long sections of plain stockinette stitch are interspersed throughout, allowing the variegated yarn colors to shine and providing visual breathing room between the more complex pattern sections.
Yarn and Materials
The Hollyhock Scarf is designed to be worked in fingering weight yarn across three distinct colors. The pattern specifies the following yardage requirements:
- Color A: 420 yards
- Color B: 320 yards
- Color C: 170 yards
The sample shown in the pattern was created using Julie Asselin Leizu Fingering yarn in the colorways Keep Me (Color A), Ardoise (Color B), and Ale (Color C). The pattern is adaptable to accommodate different yarn weights and personal preferences regarding finished size and yardage.
Pattern Flexibility and Customization
One of the key features of the Hollyhock Scarf pattern is its adaptability. The instructions include percentage indications for yarn usage, allowing knitters to maximize their available yarn and adjust the scarf dimensions according to their preferences. The pattern accommodates variations in yarn weight and total yardage, making it accessible to knitters working with different materials than those specified in the sample. For those following the yarn percentage recipe, the pattern recommends using a scale to weigh skeins at the beginning of the project to ensure accurate proportions across all three colors.
