Product Description
High Street Shawl borrows many of the same techniques found in Eden Prairie, but with a different result. High Street is a garter stitch modular shawl in three to ten colors of fingering weight yarn. This is a great pattern for stash busting since the first six colors require 25 yards or less. You can probably find these in your stash. What more can you ask for? A fun knit, fairly quick and easy, no purling, and it busts some stash! YARN INFORMATION: Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, 100% superwash merino, 420 yards per skein, 25 yards each of Cousteau (C1), Ruby Slippers (C2), Iris (C3), Baltic (C4), Jade (C5), 13 yards Flashdance (C6), 190 yards Celadon (C7), 120 yards Antler (C8), 230 yards Silver Fox (C9) and 185 yards Onyx (BC).
High Street Shawl by Nancy Whitman
What is Being Made
The High Street Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Nancy Whitman. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a triangular or crescent-shaped shawl with a generous neck edge width of approximately 52 inches (130 centimeters) and a center depth of approximately 23 inches (57.5 centimeters), making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a wrap.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for an intermediate skill level. The shawl utilizes color changing throughout the design, incorporating multiple yarn colors in a planned sequence. The pattern includes instruction on the Backward Loop Cast On (also called an e-loop or thumb cast on) for beginning the project. Additional techniques involve picking up and knitting stitches from the right side of the work, which is a common method for adding new sections or borders to knitted pieces. The pattern also references specific stitch placement and manipulation techniques that require familiarity with standard knitting terminology and methods.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout the High Street Shawl is garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. Garter stitch is a fundamental knitting stitch that produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch choice makes the pattern accessible to intermediate knitters while creating a classic, elegant fabric suitable for a shawl.
Materials and Specifications
The High Street Shawl is designed to be worked with Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, a 100% superwash merino yarn. The pattern requires a total of approximately 1,078 yards of yarn distributed across multiple colors: 25 yards each of colors C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5; 13 yards of C6; 190 yards of C7; 120 yards of C8; 230 yards of C9; and 185 yards of the border color (BC).
The project is worked on US size 5 (3.75 millimeter) circular needles measuring 40 inches (100 centimeters) in length. Additional tools required include removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and color changes, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 42 rows equaling 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the blocked measurements specified in the pattern. Blocking is an important finishing step for this shawl, as it helps even out the stitches and allows the shawl to reach its intended dimensions.
