Product Description

Enjoy your very own Hibiscus Garden, any time of year! This fun, summery shawl features big beautiful hibiscus flowers worked in lace, and highlighted by glittering stamens worked in beads. Worked from the bottom-up and shaped with short-rows, the crescent shape of this pattern stays put however you choose to wear it. The small shawlette size is perfect for keeping off a cool summer breeze, while the large shawl size works equally well as a casual summer wrap or wrapped as a scarf while you wait for summer to return!

This pattern is presented in written and charted form for lace, and all directions are written out. This pattern requires standard lace increases and decreases, some beading, and short-rows for shaping; the lace pattern does contain “rest rows” (rows of all purl).

To make this shawl you will need:

Yarn 400 yds/365 m (650 yds/595 m) lace-weight Recommended: Apple Tree Knits Stellar Lace in Azalea, 70% superwash merino/30% silk, 2-ply, 1085 yds (992 m)/3.

What Is Being Made

The Hibiscus Garden Shawl is an enchanting lace shawlette designed by Liz Capik of appletreeknits. This garment features large, beautiful hibiscus flowers as the primary design element, with subtle beadwork accents strategically placed throughout the pattern for added sparkle and visual interest. The shawl brings a summery aesthetic that can be worn and enjoyed year-round, making it a versatile accessory for any season.

Techniques and Construction

This is an advanced-level knitting project that employs sophisticated lace techniques to create the distinctive floral motifs. The pattern utilizes a stretchy cast-on method at the beginning and a stretchy bind-off method at the completion to ensure the finished shawl has appropriate drape and flexibility. The design requires working with a large number of stitches, which is why circular needles are recommended for comfortable and manageable knitting throughout the project.

Stitches and Stitch Work

The Hibiscus Garden Shawl incorporates lace stitches to form the intricate hibiscus flower patterns that define the design. The pattern includes beading techniques, with beads placed strategically throughout the shawl to enhance the floral aesthetic with subtle sparkle and dimension. The combination of lace stitchwork and bead placement requires advanced knitting skills and attention to detail.

Yarn and Materials

This shawl is designed for lace-weight yarn and offers two size options with different yardage requirements. The small version requires 400 yards (365 meters) of lace-weight yarn, while the large version requires 650 yards (595 meters). The pattern is shown in two beautiful colorways:

  • Small Size: Apple Tree Knits Stellar Lace in Azalea colorway, a 2-ply yarn composed of 70% superwash merino and 30% silk, offering approximately 1085 yards per 3.5 ounces (100 grams)
  • Large Size: Zitron Filigran in Vineyard colorway, a 100% merino wool singles yarn with approximately 656 yards per 3.5 ounces (100 grams)

Needles required are US #5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, or an appropriate size to achieve the desired fabric gauge and drape. Circular needles are specifically recommended to accommodate the large number of stitches worked in this lace pattern.
