Product Description

The main feature of Hexangle is the ribbed and cabled stitch pattern worked over the front and back of the jumper. The geometric design is inspired by natural crystal structures, traditional leaded windows, and my love of tessellation.

It's worked from the bottom up, then split for front and back and worked flat. The shoulders are seamed, and stitches picked up for the sleeves, which are worked in the round in 1x1 ribbing. Stitches are picked up and worked in ribbing for the neckband.

Hexangle Knit Jumper by Marina Skua

What is Being Made

Hexangle is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pullover jumper featuring an all-over geometric stitch design. The sweater is constructed in the round from the hem upward, with divided front and back sections at the underarms. The design is available in nine sizes, ranging from XS to XXL, with finished bust circumferences from 86.5 cm to 163.5 cm. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a project with structured shaping and decorative stitch work.

Design Inspiration and Aesthetic

The Hexangle jumper draws inspiration from natural crystal structures, traditional leaded windows, and tessellation patterns. This geometric influence is reflected throughout the garment via the primary ribbed and cabled stitch pattern that covers the front and back panels, creating a visually cohesive and mathematically inspired design.

Construction Techniques

The jumper employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure:

  • Tubular cast-on: The pattern begins with a tubular cast-on at the hem, a technique that creates a seamless, finished edge ideal for ribbed sections
  • Seamless construction in the round: The body is worked circularly from hem to underarm, eliminating side seams and ensuring consistent stitch tension
  • Simultaneous front panels: Once divided at the underarms, the front sections are worked at the same time, promoting even shaping and matching stitch patterns
  • Seamed shoulders: The shoulder seams are joined using traditional seaming methods for durability
  • Picked-up sleeves: Stitches are picked up around the armhole and worked in the round to the cuff, maintaining the seamless aesthetic
  • Picked-up neckband: The neckline is finished by picking up stitches and working a fitted band

Stitches Used

The Hexangle pattern features ribbed and cabled stitches as the primary stitch pattern elements. These stitches are worked across the entire front and back of the jumper, creating the geometric hexagonal tessellation effect. The ribbing provides vertical texture and elasticity, while the cable stitches add dimensional depth and visual interest. The combination of these stitch types produces the crystal-inspired geometric design that defines the sweater's aesthetic.

Yarn and Materials

Hexangle is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn suitable for creating defined stitch definition in both ribbed and cabled patterns. The pattern is worked on appropriate needles for DK yarn, sized to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape. The tubular cast-on and picked-up stitch techniques require standard knitting needles, and the in-the-round construction may utilize circular needles or double-pointed needles depending on the knitter's preference.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern is graded across nine sizes with finished bust measurements accommodating various body types. The sample photographed represents size 2, styled with 10 cm (4 inches) of positive ease at the bust, providing a comfortable, slightly relaxed fit while maintaining the integrity of the geometric stitch pattern.

Pattern Format and Designer

Hexangle is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Marina Skua. The pattern is intended for personal, non-commercial use. Knitters are encouraged to share their finished projects using the hashtag #HexangleJumper and tagging @marinaskua on social media.
