Product Description
Unique for his exuberant moustaches and world-renowned little grey cells, the incomparable Hercule Poirot is also known for his precise elegance, from his patent leather shoes to his impeccable formal suits.
CONSTRUCTION:
This cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down and features optional knitted-in body pockets and an afterthought chest pocket. The sleeves are separated from the body at underarm level, then worked in the round. Stitches are picked up along the fronts and the neckline to work the notched collar and button bands. The collar is shaped using German short rows (link to video tutorial in the pattern). The pocket linings require some seaming.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, working short rows (explanations/link to video tutorial provided), binding off.
Hercule Cardigan by Frogginette Knitting Patterns
What is Being Made
Hercule is a downloadable knitting pattern for a children's cardigan designed by Lisa Chemery. This intermediate-level project offers a wide range of sizes, spanning from newborn (3 months) through children aged 10 years. The cardigan is designed to fit chest measurements from 16 inches (40.5 cm) for the smallest size up to 28 inches (71 cm) for the largest size, with corresponding garment chest measurements at the underarms ranging from 18.75 inches (47.5 cm) to 33.25 inches (84.5 cm). The pattern provides flexibility in sizing, allowing knitters to choose based on the recipient's actual chest measurements rather than age labels alone, and to select sizing according to desired ease.
Techniques and Construction
This cardigan is constructed using circular knitting techniques, which allows for seamless or nearly seamless construction. The pattern employs both circular needles for the main body and set-in sleeves worked on double-pointed needles (dpns). The use of circular needles in multiple lengths—24 inches (60 cm) for the main body work and 32 inches (80 cm) for larger sizes—demonstrates a thoughtful approach to managing stitches at different stages of the project. The inclusion of a hem and button band collar indicates a finished, polished construction with functional closure elements.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Hercule cardigan is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which is the foundation of the garment's structure. Gauge is established in stockinette stitch, making it essential for achieving proper fit. The pattern includes a button band and collar, which are typically worked in ribbing or garter stitch to provide structure and prevent curling at the edges.
Materials Required
This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that works up relatively quickly and provides good structure for a children's cardigan. Needles required include a US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needle at least 24 inches (60 cm) in length for the main body, or the size needed to match stockinette stitch gauge. A US 6 (4 mm) circular needle—one size smaller than the main needle—is used for the hem and button band/collar work, with 24 inches (60 cm) length for smaller sizes and 32 inches (80 cm) length for sizes 2 years and up. One set of matching double-pointed needles (dpns) in both the larger and smaller sizes is required for working the sleeves in the round.
