Hell Creek Knit Top by Kat Riddell

What is Being Made

Hell Creek is a beginner-friendly knit top designed by Kat Riddell of the wayward knitter. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a fitted pullover available in 11 sizes ranging from 30 inches to 63 inches at the bust, designed to be worn with 0 to 2 inches of positive ease for a close, flattering fit.

Design Inspiration and Details

The Hell Creek top takes its name from the Hell Creek Formation, a geological formation spanning parts of Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota that dates from the late Cretaceous period. This formation is renowned as a rich source of fossils from marine and land reptiles, fish, dinosaurs, mammals, amphibians, plants, and invertebrates, making it a distinctive thematic reference for this knit design.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Hell Creek features an Eyelet Stripe Pattern as its primary stitch pattern, which creates an elegant, textured fabric with openwork details. The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, including:

  • Knit stitches (abbreviated as k) for stockinette sections
  • Purl stitches (abbreviated as p) for pattern variation and texture
  • Yarn overs (abbreviated as yo) to create the eyelet details characteristic of the stripe pattern
  • Cast-on techniques (abbreviated as CO) to begin the project

The eyelet stripe pattern combines these fundamental stitches to create a visually interesting fabric with small openwork details distributed throughout the design.

Materials and Gauge

Hell Creek is worked in sport-weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category ideal for creating breathable, drape-friendly garments. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 32 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the Eyelet Stripe Pattern, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.

The yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 425 yards for the smallest size (30 inches) up to 1,075 yards for the largest size (63 inches). The pattern suggests Knit One, Crochet Too Batiste 50g/208 yards yarn in the colorway "Lipstick" as an ideal choice, though any sport-weight yarn meeting the gauge requirement will work.

The pattern calls for US 5 / 3.75mm needles to achieve the specified gauge. Additional notions required are minimal: 2 stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and shaping, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends upon completion.

Skill Level and Pattern Format

Rated as a beginner-level pattern, Hell Creek is accessible to knitters new to garment construction while still offering visual interest through its eyelet stripe stitch pattern. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing for reference during knitting.
