Product Description
The Hearts in the Right Place Cowl came about because of the Covid 19 pandemic. It represents that we are all in this together despite being from all over the world. The mini cable show the separation that we are required to keep and the hearts show that despite this we can still come together from all directions to overcome it.
It is a beginner friendly pattern with enough interest for a more advanced knitter. It is also a great gift knit. It does not take a lot of yarn so it is also a great leftover project and picking unique colors can really make the pattern your own.
Hearts in the Right Place Cowl by Liz Clothier
Project Overview
Hearts in the Right Place is a knitted cowl designed to celebrate global community and connection. This beginner-friendly knitting pattern creates a finished cowl measuring approximately 11 inches wide by 10 inches tall. The design features hearts motifs combined with cable stitches, symbolizing how people from different parts of the world have come together to support one another. The hearts approach from all directions to represent unity across borders, while the cables demonstrate resilience and the ability to overcome challenges through collaboration.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This cowl employs cable stitching as a primary technique, which creates textured columns that add visual interest and structural integrity to the finished piece. The cable work symbolizes connection and strength woven throughout the design. Heart motifs are incorporated into the pattern, approaching from multiple directions to reinforce the theme of global unity and support.
The pattern is primarily worked using fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners, making this an accessible project for those new to cable work. Stitch markers are used to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistency throughout the cowl construction.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The cowl is designed to be worked in DK or Light Worsted weight yarn. The original pattern calls for Madeline Tosh Farm Twist in three colorways:
- Color A (Penumbra): 28 grams, approximately 63 yards
- Color B (Obscuro): 10 grams, approximately 22.5 yards
- Color C (Star Scatter Solid): 52 grams, approximately 117 yards
Suitable yarn substitutes include Rowan Felted Tweed or Cascade 220 DK, or any comparable DK or Light Worsted weight yarn. The pattern is worked on 3.75mm needles or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge of 24 stitches per 4 inches. An optional cable needle is recommended for managing cable stitches, and stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern sections.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to cable knitting techniques. Despite the symbolic depth of the design, the stitch work remains accessible to knitters developing their foundational skills.
