Product Description

This super bulky child's blanket is given in only one size, but it's easy to adjust to any size that you need. Thus you can easily substitute any yarn and hook size.

One of my favorite things about this blanket is that you get a lovely texture on both sides of the fabric.

I did not add an edging to this, but you can always do a round of single crochets if you like.

HDC Criss-Cross Super Bulky Child's Blanket

Project Overview

This is a crocheted child's blanket designed by Helena Reimer (Rhelena of CrochetnCrafts). The finished blanket measures 42 inches by 54 inches, making it an ideal size for a young child. The design features a distinctive criss-cross stitch pattern created through alternating rows of half double crochet and single crochet stitches, resulting in a textured, visually interesting surface.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses the crochet technique exclusively. The blanket is worked in rows from a chain foundation, building the fabric through consistent repetition of two core row patterns. The criss-cross effect is achieved by strategically skipping stitches and working into previously skipped stitches, a technique that creates visual depth and dimension without requiring complex stitch combinations.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (Ch): Used to create the foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Single Crochet (Sc): Employed in alternating rows to create a dense, stable fabric base
  • Half Double Crochet (Hdc): The primary stitch used in the criss-cross rows, worked with strategic skips to produce the pattern

Pattern Structure

The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 93 stitches (or any multiple of 2 plus 1). Row 1 establishes 92 single crochet stitches. Row 2 introduces the criss-cross technique: half double crochet stitches are worked, with alternating stitches skipped and then worked into from the previous row, creating the signature crossed appearance. Row 3 returns to single crochet across all stitches. Rows 2 and 3 are repeated for 88 rows total (rows 4 through 91), building the blanket to its finished dimensions.

Materials and Yarn

The blanket is constructed using Bernat Blanket yarn in the Super Bulky weight category (#6). This yarn is composed of 100% polyester, providing durability and easy care. Each ball contains 10.5 ounces (300 grams) and yields 220 yards (201 meters). The pattern requires 5 balls of yarn in the Sand color, though the designer notes that a sixth ball may be needed depending on individual tension and yarn usage. The super bulky weight creates a quick, satisfying project while producing a substantial, cozy finished blanket.

Tools and Notions

An 8.00mm crochet hook is used throughout this project. Additional materials include scissors for cutting yarn and a yarn needle for weaving in ends upon completion.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The gauge is 10 single crochet stitches measured over 4.5 inches. The finished blanket measures 42 inches wide by 54 inches long, a practical size suitable for draping over a child's lap or bed.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, though the pattern instructions also note an easy skill level designation. The project is well-suited for crocheters with basic stitch knowledge who are ready to work with the skip-and-work-back technique that creates the criss-cross visual effect. The repetitive nature of alternating two row patterns makes it an accessible project for building confidence with stitch manipulation.

Finished Item Use

Crafters may sell finished blankets made from this pattern, though the pattern itself is designated for personal use only.
