Hazelbrook Vest by OGE Knitwear Designs
What is Being Made
The Hazelbrook Vest is a children's knitted sleeveless garment designed by OGE Knitwear Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project is available in five size options ranging from baby through six years old, with chest measurements from 25 cm (9¾ inches) for the smallest size up to 37 cm (14½ inches) for the largest. The vest offers a classic, versatile piece suitable for layering over long-sleeved shirts or wearing as a standalone garment during warmer months.
Yarn and Materials
The Hazelbrook Vest is constructed using medium-weight Worsted, Afghan, or Aran yarn. The pattern specifies 100% Virgin Wool Merino fiber content. The pictured garments were knitted in Cascade Longwood, a 100% superwash extrafine merino wool available at 175 meters (191 yards) per 100-gram ball. An alternative yarn suggestion is Lana Grossa Cool Wool Big, which offers similar weight and fiber characteristics. The sample shown was created in the colorway Taupe.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level project employs specialized knitting techniques to create textured and dimensional effects. The pattern introduces the K1b stitch (knit one through the back loop), a technique where the knitter inserts the right needle from front to back into the space below the next stitch, then knits as normal, allowing the original stitch to fall off the left needle. This technique creates a twisted stitch that adds visual interest and texture to the finished garment. The instruction notes that turning the work over reveals the structural details of this stitch manipulation.
Stitches Used
- K1b – Knit one through the back loop, creating twisted stitches for textured detailing
- Standard knit and purl stitches for foundational fabric construction

Excellent customer service
The pattern was in a very small font, almost impossible for old eyes to read. It is badly laid out and, for the money, very poor value
