Hat Season by Elizabeth Smith
What is Being Made
Hat Season is a knitted hat pattern designed by Elizabeth Smith that offers sizing for the entire family. This downloadable knitting pattern includes five different sizes: baby, toddler, child, adult-small, and adult-large. The hat features a classic construction with a ribbed brim and stockinette stitch body, making it an accessible project for knitters of all experience levels.
Craft and Technique
This is a knitting pattern worked in the round using circular needles. The hat is constructed using the top-down or bottom-up method with seamless construction, which is ideal for creating a comfortable, well-fitting hat. The pattern demonstrates fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, including working in the round, maintaining proper tension, and managing color changes.
Stitches Used
- Ribbing: A 2x2 rib stitch (knit 2, purl 2 pattern) creates the brim, providing stretch and a finished edge that hugs the head comfortably
- Stockinette Stitch (St st): The main body of the hat is worked in stockinette stitch in the round, creating a smooth, classic fabric with a V-shaped pattern on the knit side
- Color Stripe Detail: Single stripes of contrasting color are incorporated into the stockinette body at regular intervals, adding visual interest to the finished hat
Materials and Yardage
Hat Season is worked in worsted-weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for quick projects and beginner-friendly knitting. The pattern calls for approximately 70 yards for the baby size up to 195 yards for the adult-large size. The sample shown uses Wooly Worsted by Ewe Ewe Yarns, a 100% superwash merino yarn available in 50-gram skeins with 98 yards per skein. This yarn choice provides durability and easy care, making these hats practical for family members of all ages.
Needles and Gauge
The pattern uses US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles for the ribbed brim and US 8 (5 mm) circular needles for the hat body, both in 16-inch length. The gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rounds over 4 inches in stockinette stitch in the round, which is important to achieve proper fit across all five sizes.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The hat is available in five sizes with the following finished circumferences: 12 inches for baby, 14 inches for toddler, 16 inches for child, 18 inches for adult-small, and 20 inches for adult-large. Cast-on stitch counts range from 56 stitches for the baby size to 88 stitches for the adult-large size, ensuring proper fit for each head circumference range.
Pattern Difficulty
Hat Season is classified as a beginner-level knitting pattern, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are new to the craft or those looking for a straightforward, satisfying project. The pattern uses only basic stitches and simple construction methods, allowing beginners to build confidence while creating a practical, wearable garment for family members.
