Product Description

Wrap up in timeless style with this classic Hat and Scarf set, knitted in the luxurious Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine 170. This coordinating duo features a striking Jacquard colorwork pattern worked in rich camel and deep black, creating a bold, graphic contrast that elevates any winter wardrobe. The hat is shaped with a clever divided cast-off technique for a neat, structured finish, while the scarf stretches to an impressive approximately 140 cm in length with a width of around 16 cm — generous enough to keep you truly cozy. Both pieces are worked in the round using 3–4 mm needles, making this a satisfying project for knitters ready to explore colorwork techniques. Hat and Scarf Set in Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine 170 – Pattern 5336

This free downloadable knitting pattern from Schachenmayr provides instructions for a coordinating hat and scarf set worked in the brand's own Merino Extrafine 170 yarn. The design pairs a classic stranded colourwork border with clean, minimalist stocking stitch sections, creating a timeless cold-weather accessory duo with a sophisticated two-tone palette.

About the Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for Schachenmayr original Merino Extrafine 170, a 4-ply weight yarn celebrated for its fine gauge, softness, and the warmth that pure merino fibre provides. Two colourways are specified:

  • Kamel (shade 00005) – a warm camel tone used for borders and accent rounds
  • Schwarz (shade 00099) – a classic black used for the main body of both pieces

The quantities stated are 50 g in Kamel and 250 g in Schwarz. A set of double-pointed needles (Nadelspiel) in size 3–4 is required, making this a project suited to knitters comfortable working in the round on a small needle set.

The Hat

The hat is knitted entirely in the round using a set of double-pointed needles, which is the traditional method for producing seamless tubular accessories such as beanies and winter hats. The construction progresses through distinct sections:

  • The colourwork chart (Zählmuster) is worked once through rounds 1–27, incorporating the Jacquard stranded colourwork technique in which both Kamel and Schwarz are carried across each round.
  • At a hat height of 24 cm, rounds 24–27 of the chart are repeated once more to complete the patterned section.
  • A final section in Kamel consists of one round of glatt rechts (stocking stitch, knit every round) followed by four rounds of glatt links (reverse stocking stitch, purl every round), creating a neat rolled or ridged finish at the crown.
  • At a total height of 27 cm, all stitches are cast off.
  • The cast-off edge is divided into four equal sections of 35 stitches, folded in half, and sewn together to form the characteristic flat, gathered crown of the hat.

The Scarf

The scarf is also worked in the round as a tube, which eliminates the need to manage a wrong side and keeps the colourwork neat throughout. Key construction details include:

  • 80 stitches are cast on in Kamel for a finished width of approximately 16 cm.
  • An opening border of 4 rounds of glatt links (reverse stocking stitch) in Kamel provides a tidy, contrasting edge.
  • The colourwork chart is then worked once through all 26 rounds, using the Jacquard technique with both colours.
  • The long central body of the scarf is worked in Schwarz using glatt rechts (stocking stitch) for approximately 118 cm, giving the piece its bold, minimalist main section.
  • The chart is then worked in reverse — from round 26 back to round 1 — to mirror the opening colourwork border at the opposite end.
  • A closing border of 4 rounds of glatt links in Kamel matches the cast-on edge.
  • All stitches are cast off, and both the cast-on and cast-off edges are closed to complete the tube, giving a finished total length of approximately 140 cm.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Glatt rechts – stocking stitch worked in the round (knit every round); used for the main body of the scarf and one round of the hat crown
  • Glatt links
