Harper Preemie Cap by Fiddlestyx™
Project Overview
The Harper Preemie Cap is an original unisex knitting pattern designed by Fiddlestyx™ for newborns and preemies. This beginner-friendly hat knits up quickly using self-striping sock yarn, making it an ideal project for crafters new to hat construction. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and supports a charitable cause, with 50% of net proceeds donated to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Tufts Medical Center.
Sizing and Fit
The Harper Preemie Cap is offered in two sizes to accommodate different infant head measurements. The Preemie size fits head circumferences of 9–11 inches (23–28 cm), while the Newborn size accommodates head circumferences of 12–14 inches (30–36 cm). This range ensures proper fit for various stages of early infancy.
Materials and Tools Required
This pattern calls for 4-ply yarn weight, specifically self-striping sock yarn, which creates color variation automatically as you knit without requiring yarn changes. Knitters will need a set of double-pointed needles in U.S. size 2 (2.75 mm) or the size necessary to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge and Tension
The recommended gauge for the Harper Preemie Cap is 28 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. The pattern instructions emphasize the importance of creating a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure proper fit and finished dimensions.
Skill Level and Techniques
Rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, the Harper Preemie Cap is suitable for knitters with basic foundational skills. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for those transitioning beyond complete beginner projects while remaining accessible to crafters building their technical repertoire.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Fiddlestyx™. The pattern is intended for personal, non-commercial use only and includes complete instructions for both available sizes.
