Product Description
We decided to release #harmonscrunchie as a free pattern as the perfect accessory to the harmon halter (also available in my designs)! Two options to knit flat or knit in the round :)
Both patterns were inspired by two things: my love for motorsport and Queen’s gambit! The iconic checkerboard design represents both the chequered flag of a race and a chess board.
The Harmon Scrunchie is a quick knit that can easily be made in an evening! We hope you love knitting this pattern as much as we enjoyed designing it. Any questions regarding pattern help, please e-mail us and we will try to respond as soon as possible <3
Harmon Checkerboard Scrunchie by Jennifer Olsen
What is Being Made
The Harmon Checkerboard Scrunchie is a quick-knit hair accessory designed as a complementary piece to the Harmon Halter. This scrunchie features an iconic checkerboard pattern inspired by both motorsport imagery and chess aesthetics. The design can be completed in a single evening, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking a fast, satisfying knit.
Design Inspiration and Concept
Created by designer Jennifer Olsen, the Harmon Scrunchie draws inspiration from two distinct sources: the love of motorsport and the Netflix series Queen's Gambit. The checkerboard motif serves a dual purpose, representing both the chequered flag waved at the finish line of races and the strategic board of chess. This thematic design element makes the scrunchie a statement accessory with cultural significance beyond its functional purpose.
Knitting Techniques
The pattern offers flexibility in construction method, allowing knitters to choose their preferred technique. The scrunchie can be knit in the round using either double-pointed needles or very short circular needles, or alternatively, it can be knit flat using straight needles. This adaptability accommodates different knitter preferences and available needle supplies.
Stitches and Pattern Work
The Harmon Scrunchie employs checkerboard stitch work as its primary pattern element. This technique creates the distinctive two-color geometric design that defines the scrunchie's aesthetic appeal. The checkerboard pattern requires attention to color changes and stitch placement to achieve the clean, alternating squares characteristic of the design.
Materials Required
- Needles: 3.25mm needles (choice of double-pointed needles, very short circular needles for in-the-round construction, or straight needles for flat knitting)
- Yarn: DK weight yarn in at least two colors to create the checkerboard pattern
- Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
- Additional: Stitch markers (referenced in materials list)
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Harmon Scrunchie is accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle color work and pattern following. The relatively quick completion time makes it an excellent project for practicing checkerboard techniques without the time commitment of larger garments.
Pattern Format and Availability
The Harmon Scrunchie is available as a free, downloadable PDF pattern. Knitters can access this pattern through the designer's channels, including email contact at thedoubleknitters@gmail.com and the DoubleKnittersShop on Etsy.
