Handbag Flower Leave by Iris Nikolopoulou
What is Being Made
The Handbag Flower Leave is a knitted handbag designed by Iris Nikolopoulou, measuring 31.5 x 20 cm (12.40 x 15.75 inches). This is an elegant accessory piece that combines knitting and crochet techniques to create decorative flower leaf motifs that form the body of the bag. The finished handbag features a structured construction with a lining and zipper closure for practical everyday use.
Difficulty Level and Skills Required
This pattern is rated at an intermediate skill level, making it suitable for knitters with some foundational experience. The project requires competency in multiple techniques across both knitting and crochet disciplines. Knitters will need to be comfortable with fundamental stitches and shaping methods to successfully complete this design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Handbag Flower Leave employs a combination of essential knitting stitches to construct the flower leaf squares that form the bag's primary design element. The pattern utilizes the following techniques:
- Knit stitch (k): The fundamental stitch that creates the basic fabric structure
- Purl stitch (p): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition
- Yarn over (yo): Creates decorative eyelet holes and lace elements within the flower leaf design
- Knit 2 together (k2tog): A decrease stitch that shapes the flower leaf motifs and controls the overall silhouette
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The pattern integrates crochet work as a foundational element for the flower leaf squares. The crochet techniques include:
- Magic ring (mr): The starting method used to begin each flower leaf square with a centered circular foundation
- Chain stitch (ch): Creates the base loops from which the flower leaf pattern develops
- Slip stitch (sl): Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions in the crochet work
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Handbag Flower Leave is designed to be worked with Alize Bella yarn, a 100% cotton fiber that provides a lightweight, breathable quality ideal for a handbag. The yarn is classified as fingering weight, a fine 3-ply yarn that allows for detailed stitch definition and intricate pattern work.
Yarn requirements total 4 skeins: 2 skeins in cream and 2 skeins in pink. Each skein weighs 50 grams (1.76 ounces) and contains 180 meters (196 yards) of yarn, providing approximately 360 meters (392 yards) of each color for the complete project.
Tools and Notions
The pattern requires specific needles and tools to accommodate the fine yarn weight:
- Crochet hook: Sizes 1-3 for working the magic ring and chain stitches in the flower leaf foundation
- Knitting needles: Sock knitting needles in 3mm (UK size 11) for the main knitting work
- Gauge: 26 stitches = 10 cm (4 inches) on the specified needles
- Swatch size: 10.25 x 10.25 cm (4 inches) for gauge testing
- Additional notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors, cotton lining fabric, zipper for closure, cotton thread, and sewing needle for attaching lining and hardware
Construction Method
The Handbag Flower Leave is constructed by creating individual flower leaf squares that are assembled together to form the bag body. The pattern begins with a crochet magic ring foundation, where a chain stitch is created and transferred to a knitting needle. This hybrid approach combines the precision of crochet for the initial motif setup with knitting techniques to develop the leaf shapes and overall structure. The designer has provided detailed video tutorials to guide knitters through each step of the construction process, making this advanced project more accessible to intermediate-level crafters.
Finishing and Assembly
Once the knitted flower leaf squares are completed, the handbag is finished
