Halloween Table Runner by Karin Burkart
What is Being Made
This is a Halloween-themed table runner designed by Karin Burkart, perfect for seasonal home décor. The finished piece measures approximately 15 x 100 cm, making it an ideal length for standard dining tables. The design combines festive holiday aesthetics with functional table setting accessories, allowing crafters to add a decorative touch to their Halloween entertaining.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is worked entirely in crochet, specifically using the Filet stitch technique. Filet crochet is a classic method that creates an openwork fabric with a grid-like appearance, formed by alternating solid blocks and open spaces. This technique is ideal for creating decorative patterns and motifs, as the graph-based design translates easily into visual imagery. The pattern provides two working options: crafters can follow a detailed graph chart or work from row-by-row written explanations, making it accessible to different learning preferences.
Stitches Used
The Halloween Table Runner employs fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for filet work:
- Double crochet (dc) – the primary stitch forming the solid blocks of the filet pattern
- Chain stitch (ch) – used to create the open spaces and turning chains between rows
- Half double crochet (hdc) – included in the stitch repertoire for pattern variations
- Slip stitch (sl st) – used to join rounds or secure stitches in the first stitch
The pattern is written in US crochet terms. A key structural element is that the chain stitch always counts as the first stitch of each row. The filet blocks are constructed with 4 double crochets each, while open spaces consist of 1 double crochet followed by 2 chains. When multiple blocks appear consecutively, the final double crochet of one block serves as the first double crochet of the next block, creating efficient stitch counts: 2 consecutive blocks total 7 dc, 3 blocks total 10 dc, and 4 blocks total 13 dc. Each row begins with a block containing 3 chain stitches and 3 double crochets.
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for Cotton Fingering yarn in a 4-ply weight, with a total of 60 grams required. The designer used DMC Petra nr 5 for the original project. A 1.75 mm crochet hook is recommended to achieve the proper gauge. The specified gauge is 10 x 10 cm worked over 12 rows and 24 double crochets, ensuring consistent sizing and drape for the finished table runner.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for those new to crochet or filet techniques. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear pattern guidance—whether working from graph or written instructions—provide an approachable introduction to decorative crochet work. The repetitive nature of filet stitch creates a meditative, rhythm-based crafting experience suitable for developing fundamental skills.
