Not sure what to do with all those lovely mini skeins?
Squishy garter stitch, short rows and fun colors make up this shawlette. The slightly more than half moon shape is framed by a nice i-cord edge, finished neatly and seamlessly around the tips of the shawlette.
Worked in one 100g skein and four mini skeins (10g each) of a fingering weight yarn, the color possibilities are endless. A gradient, complementary colors, a rainbow? Choose four 10g skeins for a version like the pattern sample, or use 5g portions for individually colored wedges.
As the main color parts are worked by how much yarn you have left, you can use any yardage and yarn weight. However, if deviating from the yarn weight and yardage stated in the pattern, make sure you have enough contrast color yarn to match!

Hallow Moon Shawlette by Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen
What is Being Made
The Hallow Moon is a fingering weight knitted shawlette featuring a distinctive half-moon silhouette. This versatile accessory is designed to showcase color work and is an ideal project for crafters looking to use up mini skeins of yarn. The finished shawlette measures approximately 120 cm (47 inches) in width with a depth of several inches at its deepest point, making it a substantial yet lightweight layering piece.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several key techniques to achieve its elegant shape and polished finish. Short rows form the foundation of the half-moon construction, allowing the shawlette to develop its distinctive curved silhouette without traditional increases. The body is worked in garter stitch, a fundamental knit technique that creates a squishy, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. An i-cord edge frames the perimeter, providing a neat and seamless finish around the tips of the shawlette. This i-cord border is worked continuously around the shaped edges, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a professional, polished appearance.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – the primary stitch throughout the body, created by knitting every row
- I-cord – a tubular knitted cord used for the decorative and structural edge finish
Yarn and Materials
The Hallow Moon is designed to work with fingering weight yarn and accommodates flexible yardage options depending on color preferences. The pattern sample uses The Plucky Knitter Primo Fingering (75% Merino, 20% Cashmere, 5% Nylon) at 357 meters per 100g, along with Five Moons Luna 4ply (75% Merino, 25% Nylon) at 425 meters per 100g. The project requires one 100g skein of main color yarn plus four mini skeins of 10g each (or five 5g portions for individually colored wedges). The sample colorway is "Medieval." Crafters can customize their version by selecting complementary colors, gradient progressions, or rainbow color combinations. A gauge of 20 stitches and 35 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) in garter stitch is recommended, though the pattern notes that gauge is not crucial—variations will simply affect the final yardage requirements and finished dimensions.
Design Flexibility
The Hallow Moon pattern offers significant creative freedom in color selection and construction. Knitters can choose between using four 10g mini skeins for a version similar to the pattern sample, or divide five 5g portions into individually colored wedges for a more segmented appearance. This flexibility makes the pattern particularly appealing for stash busting and experimenting with color combinations.
