Product Description
I had a large scrap of beautiful hand dyed sock yarn from Rita Mae Yarns and I couldn't let it go to waste! Instead of leaving it to sit pretty in my yarn stash, I designed this hair bow scrunchie with it. It works up pretty quickly and uses a beautiful sedge stitch for a really great texture. This bow is perfect for ponies, but I also love it with a big hairbun, too! You'll need about 75 yards of sock /fingering weight yarn for this pattern and a thick ponytail holder.
Hair Bow Scrunchie Crochet Pattern by Priscilla Allen
Project Overview
The Hair Bow Scrunchie is a beginner-friendly crochet headwear accessory designed by Priscilla Allen. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a decorative bow that attaches to a ponytail holder, making it suitable for securing ponytails and buns with added style and texture. The project works up quickly, making it an ideal pattern for crafters new to crochet or those seeking a fast, satisfying make.
What You'll Create
This pattern produces a textured hair bow scrunchie—a functional accessory that combines a crocheted bow element with a standard ponytail holder. The finished piece is versatile enough to wear with everyday ponytails or dressed up with larger hair buns, offering multiple styling options from a single pattern.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Hair Bow Scrunchie features the sedge stitch, which creates beautiful, dimensional texture throughout the design. This stitch choice gives the bow visual interest and tactile appeal while remaining accessible to beginner crocheters. The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches including:
- Chain (Ch) — the foundation stitch for starting the project
- Single Crochet (Sc) — a basic, tight stitch for structure
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) — a medium-height stitch for versatility
- Double Crochet (DC) — a taller stitch for drape and coverage
- Slip Stitch (ss) — used for joining rounds and finishing
- Skip (sk) — technique for creating shaping and stitch pattern variations
Yarn and Materials
The Hair Bow Scrunchie requires approximately 75 yards of sock, fingering, or baby weight yarn in super fine CYC weight 1. The sample shown in the pattern uses Rita Mae Yarns Sweet Pea Sock in the Berries N' Cream colorway, showcasing how hand-dyed yarn elevates the finished accessory. This yardage makes the project an excellent stash-buster for leftover sock and fingering weight yarns.
In addition to yarn, you will need a US size D (3.25mm) crochet hook or the size required to achieve proper gauge for your yarn. A thick ponytail holder serves as the functional base for the scrunchie, providing the elastic element that secures the hair accessory in place.
Additional Supplies
To complete this project, gather a tapestry sewing needle for weaving in yarn ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and a measuring tape for checking gauge and finished dimensions. These are standard finishing tools found in most crochet supply collections.
Skill Level
Classified as a beginner pattern, the Hair Bow Scrunchie is perfect for crocheters just starting their journey or those looking for a quick, confidence-building project. The straightforward stitch combinations and rapid completion time make it an encouraging first or early project.
