Product Description

Gruse is a pullover that can be worn with no ease or with positive ease. Gruse has a nice classic texured all over pattern and the pullover is worked from the bottom edge and up. The pullover has long set in sleeves (the yoke is worket in one piece / raglan construction).

The pattern is made for at yarn with a gauge of 24 stitches per 10 centimeters (ltextured pattern) i.e. a yardage of approximate 300 meters per 100 grams. Pictured in hand dyed (dyed with walnut and cochenille) 100% merino from Chester Wool Company.

The pattern includes directions for a size S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL with chest width 95 (105, 115, 125, 135, 145) centimeters and a length of 58 (60, 62, 63, 64, 65) centimeters.

This pattern is written for a knitter who is familiar with simple textured patterns, knit and purl (worked in the round as well as back and forth), a knitter who is able to follow written instructions and work increases, decreases and pick up stitches. The direction is written text.

Gruse Pullover by HelstrupDesign

What is Being Made

Gruse is a loose-fitting pullover sweater designed as a classic everyday knit with a textured all-over pattern and finished rib edges. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXXL, with finished chest widths from 95 to 145 centimeters and lengths from 58 to 65 centimeters. The pullover offers a relaxed, comfortable fit suitable for various body types and styling preferences.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental sweater construction techniques appropriate for knitters with basic experience. The pattern utilizes circular knitting methods, which are worked seamlessly from the bottom up or in the round to create a cohesive garment. The use of both longer and shorter circular needles allows for efficient knitting of different sections, transitioning from the body to the neckline. Rib edging is incorporated at key finishing points to create structure and prevent curling at the hem and cuffs.

Stitches Used

The Gruse sweater features a classic all-over textured stitch pattern as its primary design element. While the specific stitch name is not detailed in the pattern information provided, the textured pattern creates visual interest across the entire garment surface. Ribbed stitches are used for the edges, including the hem, cuffs, and neckline, providing elasticity and a polished finish that frames the main textured pattern.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

Yarn Weight and Type: Gruse is designed for sport-weight yarn, specifically wool or wool-blend yarns with a yardage of approximately 300 meters per 100 grams. The pattern recommends high-quality merino wool options such as Malabrigo Arroyo, Lang Yarns Merino 150, Malabrigo Silky Merino, Semilla from BC Garn, or Hjertegarn Extrafine Merino 150. The pictured sample was knitted in 100% merino wool from Chester Wool Company in sport 300 weight, hand-dyed using natural dyes including walnut and cochenille for a unique colorway.

Yarn Quantities by Size:

  • Size S: 550–600 grams
  • Size M: 600–650 grams
  • Size L: 650–700 grams
  • Size XL: 700–750 grams
  • Size XXL: 750–800 grams
  • Size XXXL: 800–850 grams

Needles: The pattern requires two 3 mm circular needles—one in 60 or 80 centimeters (24 or 32 inches) for working the main body of the sweater, and one shorter 40-centimeter (16-inch) circular needle for the neckline. Alternatively, 3 mm double-pointed knitting needles may be substituted for the shorter circular needle when working smaller circumferences.

Additional Notions: Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and construction sections, while a yarn needle is needed for weaving in ends and finishing the garment securely.

Gauge and Customization

Achieving the correct gauge is emphasized as critical to the success of this project, as every knitter's tension varies. Knitters are advised to always use a needle size that produces the gauge specified in the pattern, which may differ from the recommended 3 mm needles depending on individual knitting style. Taking time to knit and measure a gauge swatch before beginning the main project ensures the finished sweater will achieve the intended finished measurements.
