Grey Leaves Cardigan by Cheryl Chow

What is Being Made

The Grey Leaves Cardigan is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed as a warm, winter-ready garment. This cardigan features a distinctive high collar for added warmth during cold months and is constructed using a bottom-up knitting method. The finished cardigan is available in multiple sizes, with bust circumferences ranging from 34.5 inches to 52.25 inches and finished lengths between 23 and 25.5 inches, accommodating various body types and fit preferences.

Techniques and Construction Methods

The Grey Leaves Cardigan employs several intermediate knitting techniques to create its sophisticated design. The garment is worked from the bottom-up in one piece, utilizing raglan shaping for seamless construction and improved fit. This method allows knitters to work both flat and in the round, providing flexibility in the knitting process. The pattern requires proficiency in multiple foundational and intermediate skills, including:

  • Knit and purl stitches
  • Cable knitting techniques
  • Lace ribbing construction
  • Increasing and decreasing for shaping
  • Working in the round
  • Picking up stitches for collar and button bands
  • Creating buttonholes for closure
  • Knit and purl through back loop variations

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern incorporates a charted leaf motif as its primary decorative element. One repeat of the four leaf chart measures 21 stitches wide and 4½ inches in width, with a vertical repeat of 4½ inches tall. The cardigan combines stockinette stitch as the base fabric with lace ribbing details and cable elements. The ribbing is worked in a k1, p1 (knit one, purl one) pattern, creating classic texture and structure at cuffs, hems, and the high collar.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Grey Leaves Cardigan is designed for aran weight yarn, also known as worsted weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for both the leaf chart and cable details. The pattern specifies US7 (4.5mm) circular needles for working the body flat, with the same needle size used for working in the round. Gauge is critical for this pattern and must be achieved in both flat and in-the-round knitting methods.

Gauge Requirements

Accurate gauge is essential for proper fit and garment proportions. The pattern provides two gauge measurements:

  • Stockinette stitch gauge: 17 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10cm) on US7 (4.5mm) needles
  • K1, p1 ribbing gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows over 4 inches (10cm) on US7 (4.5mm) needles

Knitters must verify gauge in both flat and in-the-round knitting to ensure the finished cardigan meets the intended dimensions.
