What you'll need

Product Description

They say “Cats leave pawprints in your heart” and they actually leave. Such an amazing creatures, they are.

My cat lady Gretchen passed away last 21 of April. I gave this new design her name as a humble homage, for all the love and hapiness she gave me during the almost 12 years. Never ever, will she be forgotten.

“Gretchen” blanket uses the mosaic overlay technique and is written in english (US terms). It has almost 100 pictures, to help you through all rows and rounds, and explanations for all crochet small techniques used. Also, it has a stitch guide and charts for body and border.

With a dk yarn and a 4 mm hook, blanket measures 110 cm x 133 cm (43” x 52”), approximately. All information about materials and size are in page 2 of the pdf file. Size is easily adjustable.

This is not a CAL but you can join my Facebook Group - Oneskeinoflove Crochet - to show your blankets and get any help you might need along the way.

Gretchen Crochet Blanket by Ana Morais Soares

What is Being Made

Gretchen is a downloadable crochet blanket pattern designed by Ana Morais Soares of One Skein of Love. This intermediate-level project creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 110 cm x 133 cm (43" x 52"), making it a substantial throw-sized blanket suitable for layering on beds, sofas, or chairs. The design incorporates a structured pattern repeat with strategic color changes to create visual interest and depth.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction utilizes a repeating stitch pattern worked in the round or in rows, with careful attention to gauge and stitch placement. The pattern incorporates multiple color changes throughout the project, requiring crafters to manage yarn transitions and maintain consistent tension across color blocks. Tapestry needle finishing is required to weave in ends and complete the blanket professionally.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch): Foundation and connecting stitches throughout the pattern
  • Single Crochet (sc): Primary stitch providing structure and density to the fabric
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions between color sections
  • Stitch Spaces (sp): Open areas within the pattern that create texture and allow yarn to show through

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Gretchen is designed using Stylecraft Special DK yarn, a 100% acrylic fiber available in multiple colorways. The pattern requires a total of 14 balls of yarn across four coordinating colors: 6 balls of C1 (Denim, 1302), 2 balls of C2 (Violet, 1277), 3 balls of C3 (Wisteria, 1432), and 3 balls of C4 (Parma Violet, 1724). Each ball contains 100 g (295 m / 322 yards), providing approximately 4,130 total yards for the complete project. The DK weight yarn creates a fabric with excellent drape and softness suitable for blanket applications.

Tools and Equipment

  • 4 mm / G-6 Crochet Hook: Sized appropriately for DK weight yarn to achieve proper gauge
  • Tapestry Needle: For weaving in yarn ends and finishing
  • Scissors: For cutting yarn between color changes

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches x 33 rows measured over a swatch of approximately 12 cm x 18 cm (4.7" x 7"). This gauge measurement includes the complete pattern repeat plus 3 additional stitches (two of which serve as border stitches). Achieving accurate gauge is essential for obtaining the final blanket dimensions of 110 cm x 133 cm (43" x 52"). Crafters should work a gauge swatch before beginning the main project to ensure proper sizing.

Skill Level and Project Difficulty

Gretchen is classified as an Intermediate 2 crochet project, indicating it is suitable for crafters with foundational crochet knowledge who are ready to tackle more complex color work and pattern management. The intermediate difficulty reflects the need to work with multiple yarn colors, maintain consistent tension, and follow a detailed stitch pattern throughout the project. This is an ideal pattern for crafters looking to develop their skills in color management and larger-scale blanket construction.
