Product Description
Inspired by birdsong and the promise of spring, the Greenfinch Cowl is the first of my Feathered Friends Collection. Knitted in the round, it has a mock eyelet cable rib to the edges, while the main body is in reverse stocking stitch with my signature birdy feet formed from twisted stitches. Both these stitch patterns are easy to memorise so it’s not an arduous knit - though you will need to keep a gently eye on what you are doing. It’s not a beginners knit, but if you can knit and purl confidently you’ll be able to do this just fine, and if you are an experienced hand it’ll be a satisfying and quick project.
To fit adults or older children - Choose size based on the fit you would prefer. The XL is intended to be much looser/oversized.
Can be knitted with any standard DK yarn - smooth yarns and solid/semi solid colours will work best.
Greenfinch Cowl by Donna Jones Designs
What is Being Made
The Greenfinch Cowl is a cosy, neck-warming cowl designed and created by Donna Jones Designs. This handknitted accessory is inspired by nature and features a decorative birdy footprint pattern that adds visual interest to a practical, everyday garment. The cowl is worked seamlessly in the round, creating a continuous tube of fabric perfect for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its distinctive aesthetic:
- Knitting in the round: The entire cowl is constructed using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, professional finish.
- Mock eyelet rib pattern: A 4-round eyelet mock cable rib creates an elegant textured surface. This pattern involves strategic decreases on round 1 that are increased back to the original stitch count on round 2, producing the characteristic eyelet holes within the ribbed structure.
- Twisted stitch birdy footprint pattern: A decorative motif inspired by bird tracks adds a nature-themed design element throughout the cowl.
- Cable techniques: The pattern incorporates cable work, requiring the use of a cable needle to create the twisted, dimensional effects characteristic of cable knitting.
Stitches Used
The Greenfinch Cowl utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in structured patterns. The mock cable rib combines ribbing with eyelet decreases and increases to create texture and visual interest. Twisted stitches form the birdy footprint motif, adding both texture and a whimsical design element inspired by nature.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn. The sample shown was knitted in Juniper Moon Farm Findley DK, a luxury blend of 50% Merino Wool with 50% Silk. This yarn comes in 50g (1¾oz) balls with 119m (131yds) per ball. The pattern requires 2, 3, or 6 balls depending on the size selected. Knitters may substitute any DK weight yarn of similar thickness.
Needles and Notions: The project requires two circular needles in different sizes. A 4mm (UK 8/US 6) circular needle and a 4.5mm (UK 7/US 7) circular needle are both needed. Needle length varies by size: 40cm (16in) needles are used for sizes S and M, while 60cm (24in) needles are used for size L. Additional notions include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and a cable needle for executing the cable and twisted stitch techniques.
Pattern Format and Skill Level
The Greenfinch Cowl is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern suitable for intermediate knitters. The pattern includes both written instructions and charted instructions, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method of following the design. The pattern notes provide helpful guidance on yarn substitution and cast-on method selection, making the project accessible to experienced knitters looking to customize their finished piece.
