Grand Duchess Knit Hat by Ashley Knowlton

What is Being Made

The Grand Duchess is an elegant knit hat featuring a wide brim and slouchy body, designed for both countryside walks and winter evenings in town. This intermediate-level knitting project comes in three sizes to fit head circumferences ranging from 14-24 inches (35.5-61 cm). The finished hat body measures approximately 20.5 to 25.25 inches (52-64 cm) around at its widest point, with a depth of 10.75 inches (27 cm), while the brim measures between 15.75 and 21 inches (40.5-50.75 cm) unstretched.

Knitting Techniques and Methods

This hat is constructed using circular knitting techniques, allowing for seamless construction in the round. The pattern employs magic loop method or traditional circular needle work for the body sections, transitioning to double-pointed needles (dpns) for the crown decreases as the circumference becomes too small for circular needles. The design incorporates cable stitches, which are a key decorative element of the pattern. Notably, the pattern notes indicate that knitters experienced with cabling can work cables without a cable needle, streamlining the construction process for more advanced crafters.

Stitches Used

The Grand Duchess utilizes cable stitches as a primary design feature, creating visual texture and interest across the hat body. The pattern combines these cable elements with stockinette stitch and other complementary stitches to achieve the elegant aesthetic. The slouchy silhouette is created through strategic increases and decreases that shape the hat from the brim through the body to the crown.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This project requires approximately 300 yards (320 meters) of aran or bulky/chunky weight yarn. The sample shown uses Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky in the colorway Aubergine (#17034), which features a luxurious fiber blend of 55% merino wool, 33% microfiber, and 12% cashmere. This particular yarn comes in 50-gram balls yielding 71 yards (65 meters) per ball, requiring four balls to complete the project.

Needles and Notions

  • US 8 (5mm) circular needle, at least 32 inches (80 cm) long for magic loop method, or alternatively a 16-inch (40 cm) circular needle for the body combined with a set of double-pointed needles for decreases
  • Cable needle (optional, as cables can be worked without one by experienced knitters)

The chunky weight yarn and appropriate needle size create a quick-knitting project that produces a substantial, warm hat suitable for winter wear. The combination of merino wool, microfiber, and cashmere in the recommended yarn provides both warmth and softness against the skin, making this an excellent choice for a luxury winter accessory.
