Product Description

Description

The Grace and Frankie Sweater is knitted flat in pieces and then seamed together, circular needles are only used to accommodate the number of stitches. You knit from the bottom up the Back, the Front and the Saddle Shoulder Sleeves. You will then sew the saddle straps to the shoulders and knit the neckband in two stages. Then set in the sleeves and sew underarm and sleeve seams. The last touch is sewing the buttons in place…and you’re done!

Grace & Frankie Inspired Sweater by Skips a Generation

What Is Being Made

This is a knitted pullover sweater inspired by the aesthetic of Grace & Frankie, featuring a classic construction with bracelet-length sleeves. The design is available in five sizes ranging from XS to XL, with finished bust measurements from 76 cm (30") to 116 cm (45⅝"). The sweater is shown in size M with 5 cm (2") of positive ease allowance, offering a comfortable, relaxed fit. Finished length varies from 61 cm (24") in the smallest size to 69 cm (27⅛") in the largest size, while the bracelet sleeves measure a consistent 44–44.5 cm (17⅜–17½") across all sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sweater employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for advanced beginners. The construction involves casting on to establish the initial stitches, followed by working in knit and purl stitches to create the fabric structure. The pattern requires increases and decreases to shape the body and sleeves to the desired proportions. Picking up stitches is used to add elements such as neckbands or edgings, while binding off secures the final edges. The sweater is constructed from pieced sections that are seamed together, meaning the front, back, and sleeves are knitted separately and then joined using a tapestry needle, a traditional method that allows for precise shaping and easier construction.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches as the foundation of the design. Knit and purl stitches form the primary fabric, likely arranged to create textural interest or colorwork effects. The pattern includes shaping through strategic increases and decreases worked into the fabric. Stitch markers are used to denote pattern repeats or important shaping points, helping the knitter maintain accuracy throughout the project. The use of picked-up stitches allows for clean, professional-looking edges and transitions between different sections of the sweater.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The sweater is designed to be knitted with DROPS Paris uni colour aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn classified as CYCA 4. Each skein contains 50 g (1.8 oz) and yields 75 m (82 yards). The yarn is composed of 100% cotton, making it a breathable, lightweight choice suitable for warmer seasons or layering. Yardage requirements vary by size: XS requires 7 skeins of the main color, while XL requires 11 skeins. The contrasting color requires 2–4 skeins depending on size. The project calls for US size 6 (4 mm) circular needles measuring 24" (60 cm) for the main knitting, and US size 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles of the same length for ribbed edgings or other sections requiring a tighter gauge. Two stitch markers and a tapestry needle are essential notions for construction.

Notions and Finishing Details

The sweater features button closures and decorative elements. The pattern specifies two 25 mm-diameter (1") DROPS Cedar buttons and four 15 mm-diameter (⅝") DROPS Cedar buttons, suggesting a buttoned front or other closure details. Cedar buttons add a natural, warm aesthetic consistent with the Grace & Frankie inspired design. These finishing touches elevate the handmade quality of the completed garment.

Skill Level and Pattern Scope

Rated as Advanced Beginner, this pattern is accessible to knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques but are ready to tackle more complex projects. The skills required—casting on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, pick up stitches, bind off, and seaming—represent the core competencies of intermediate knitting. The pieced construction and use of circular needles make this an excellent project for building confidence in garment assembly and shaping techniques.
