Product Description
The sweater is sealmess, top down and features circular yoke.
The yarn I used for this pattern is Fårö Tunn Gotlandsull, lovely Gotland wool, 100 g/300 m (available here). If you want to use another yarn, please note that despite of the yardage this wool tends to "swell" after washing and blocking, so would need a heavier yarn. Gauge: 16 sts x 28 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm in stockinette on 4.5 mm needles in circular knitting. Notions: I recommend several pairs of circular needles in order to be able to try on as you work. For neck opening ribbing and sleeves use either double pointed needles or short circular needles (40 mm); stitch markers
Gotland Wool Sweater by Anna Verschik
What is Being Made
This is a seamless, top-down circular yoke sweater designed by independent knitwear designer Anna Verschik. The garment features a customizable fit and is constructed using the popular top-down method, allowing knitters to try on the sweater as they progress through the pattern. The design is available in two size ranges: S-M with a finished bust circumference of 92 cm, and L-XL with a finished bust circumference of 120 cm. The sweater length from underarm to hem is adjustable, with suggested lengths of 39 cm for S-M and 42 cm for L-XL, though knitters can modify these measurements to suit their preferences.
Techniques Used
This sweater employs several key knitting techniques that make it suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The seamless construction method eliminates the need for seaming, creating a more polished finished garment. The top-down circular yoke approach allows knitters to work from the neckline downward, distributing increases evenly across the yoke to create sleeve cap shaping. The pattern incorporates try-on-as-you-go methodology, enabling knitters to check fit during construction rather than discovering fit issues after completion. The design includes positive ease, meaning the finished measurements are intentionally larger than body measurements for comfortable wear and movement.
Stitches and Construction Details
The sweater utilizes ribbing for the neckline opening and sleeve cuffs, which provides elasticity and a finished appearance. The body and yoke are worked in stockinette stitch, the fundamental stitch in knitting that creates the classic smooth, V-textured fabric. Circular knitting techniques are used throughout to maintain the seamless construction, with increases strategically placed to shape the yoke and sleeves.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The recommended yarn is Fårö Tunn Gotlandsull from Knit4U, a blend of 70% Gotland wool and 30% merino wool. This yarn composition provides warmth and durability from the Gotland wool while the merino adds softness and elasticity. The yarn is supplied in 100-gram skeins with a yardage of 300 meters per skein. Yarn requirements depend on size: the S-M size requires 3 skeins (900 meters total), while the L-XL size requires 4 skeins (1200 meters total).
The pattern calls for 4 mm circular needles for ribbing and 4.5 mm circular needles for the body and yoke. Anna Verschik recommends having several pairs of circular needles available to facilitate the try-on-as-you-go approach. For the neckline opening ribbing and sleeve work, knitters may use either double-pointed needles or short circular needles (40 cm length) to manage the smaller circumference of these sections comfortably.
