Imagine wrapping yourself in a shawl so light and airy that it feels like a gentle hug from a cloud. Gossamer is a crescent-shaped shawl with garter stitch and delicate lace.
And the best part? You only need one skein of fingering-weight yarn.
This pattern has both written and charted instructions.
Yarn: Approximately 366 m / 400 yds of fingering weight yarn. Shown with Lichen and Lace 1ply Superwash Merino Fingering (100% merino wool; 366 m / 400 yds per 100 g).
Gossamer is a crescent-shaped knitted shawl designed by Janina Kallio. This lightweight accessory is crafted to feel exceptionally airy and delicate, making it an ideal layering piece or standalone wrap. The shawl is engineered for portability and quick completion, requiring only a single skein of yarn, making it perfect for knitters seeking a satisfying project that doesn't demand extensive yardage or lengthy time commitment.
The shawl showcases a thoughtfully balanced design combining structural simplicity with decorative complexity. The body of Gossamer features alternating sections of garter stitch and delicate lace stripes, creating visual interest through the interplay of smooth, textured knit fabric and openwork patterning. The lace stripes emerge organically as you progress through the knitting, adding an element of discovery to the crafting process. The shawl culminates in a wide lace border that frames the crescent shape with an elegant, attention-commanding edge. The bind-off is finished with a playful picot bind-off, which adds a refined, decorative detail while ensuring the stitches release smoothly from the needles.
Gossamer employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques:
The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore lace patterning and shaping techniques.
Gossamer is designed to work with fingering-weight yarn (also known as 4-ply yarn), a fine, delicate yarn weight that contributes to the shawl's gossamer-like quality and drape. The pattern requires only one skein of yarn, making it an economical and accessible project. The specific yarn weight and minimal yardage requirement ensure the finished shawl achieves its intended lightweight, cloud-like aesthetic. Standard knitting needles appropriate for fingering-weight yarn are used throughout the project.
Gossamer is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing immediate access to the complete instructions for independent knitters. The pattern is presented in a digital format suitable for screen reference or printing.
