This is multipurpose gnome: he can be a tea cosy (the gnome who snuck inside for his tea break) OR you can make him as a toy 38 cm tall (mine is keen on indoor pot plants, having his very own watering can). Pattern has instructions for a spade, mug of tea, flower in a pot and a watering can – use whatever combination suits you.
Uses your choice of 8 ply/DK yarn and some eyelash or feathers type yarn for the beard. This pdf download pattern has instructions for how to make i-cords. There are lots of pictures to go with the detailed instructions.
This downloadable knitting pattern by Rian Anderson enables crafters to create two charming gnome projects: a functional tea cosy designed to fit 6 to 8 cup teapots, and a standalone toy gnome figure. The tea cosy measures 46 centimeters all around at its widest part, with an 8 centimeter spout opening and 10 centimeter handle opening. The toy gnome stands 38 centimeters tall to the top of its hat and has 44 centimeter hips, making it a substantial decorative companion piece or gift item.
These intermediate-level projects employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with basic to moderate experience. The pattern utilizes both standard straight needles and double-pointed needles to construct various components of the gnomes. The use of multiple needle sizes—5.5mm (US 9), 4.5mm (US 7), and 3.5mm (US 4)—allows for proper gauge and shaping across different sections of the garments. The construction method involves knitting separate pieces for clothing elements such as trousers, jacket, hat, boots, and accessories, which are then assembled to create the finished gnome figures.
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern overview, the intermediate difficulty rating indicates the use of standard knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques such as increases and decreases to form the three-dimensional gnome body and clothing. The pattern likely incorporates basic stockinette stitch for the main fabric, with additional shaping to create the distinctive gnome silhouette including the characteristic pointed hat, rounded body, and limbs.
Yarn: The pattern calls for 8 ply/DK weight yarn in multiple colors to create the detailed gnome design. Orange yarn (80 grams) forms the trousers, while green or blue (25 grams) creates the jacket. Pale pink yarn (30 grams) is used for the face and hands, dark red (25 grams) for the hat and hankie, black (25 grams) for the belt and boot soles, and dark brown (25 grams) for the boots and spade handle. Additional small amounts of grey, white, fawn, yellow-green, and red yarns provide details for accessories including a spade, watering can, glasses, buckle, mug, tea, and flower pot. A thick eyelash yarn such as Moda Vera's "Jazz" or Paton's "Feathers" in white (25 grams) creates the distinctive beard, eyebrows, and hair characteristic of garden gnomes.
Needles and Tools: The pattern requires one pair of 5.5mm (US 9) needles, one pair of 4.5mm (US 7) needles, and two 3.5mm (US 4) double-pointed needles to accommodate the various sections and techniques throughout the project.
The gnome design showcases detailed colorwork and accessory elements that bring personality to the finished pieces. The tea cosy version features all the charming details of the toy gnome while being sized appropriately to slip over a standard teapot. The toy gnome can be displayed as a decorative figure or positioned as if watering plants, adding whimsical character to any space. The pattern's versatility allows crafters to create both projects from a single pattern download, offering excellent value for intermediate knitters seeking cheerful, character-driven projects.
