Gnome Ornaments by Denise Canela
What is Being Made
These charming gnome ornaments are small decorative pieces designed for holiday displays and festive decoration. Each completed gnome ornament measures approximately 10 x 5 inches (25.4 x 12.7 cm) when stretched out, making them perfect for tree decorations, shelf displays, or gift embellishments. The design features a distinct gnome character with a body, face, and textured beard detail.
Techniques Used
This project employs loom knitting techniques, which offer an accessible alternative to traditional needle knitting. The pattern is specifically designed for advanced beginners and emphasizes ease of construction through unconventional written instructions that prioritize clarity for newer crafters. The primary technique involves working on a small circular loom with systematic stitch placement and removal.
Key construction techniques include:
- Knit stitches using the U-wrap method – a fundamental loom knitting technique that creates basic knit fabric
- Decrease stitches – worked over two pegs to shape the ornament and reduce stitch count as needed
- Stuffing and shaping – the ornament is filled with polyester fiberfill to create dimension and form
- Textured finishing – a soft wire pet brush is used to create the characteristic gnome beard texture
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes two primary stitches:
- Knit stitch (U-wrap) – the foundation stitch that creates the main fabric of the gnome body and face
- Decreases – strategic stitch reductions worked across two pegs to shape and contour the ornament
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Worsted weight or aran weight yarn is used for this project. Approximately 40 yards of worsted weight yarn is needed for the main hat, body, and face components, with an additional 3-4 yards reserved for creating the beard detail.
Loom and Hook: Any small 24-peg loom works for this pattern, paired with any standard loom hook for manipulating stitches during the knitting process.
Additional Tools and Materials:
- Small soft wire pet brush – used to fluff and texture the beard
- Large-eye blunt needle – for weaving in yarn ends and assembling components
- Stitch markers – to track position and pattern progression
- Scissors – for cutting yarn
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing – to fill and shape the completed ornament
Design Notes
Designed by Denise M. Canela, this pattern prioritizes accessibility for crafters new to loom knitting while maintaining visual appeal. The unconventional pattern writing style is intentionally structured to help beginners understand each step clearly. A video tutorial is provided to supplement the written instructions, demonstrating techniques such as the U-wrap knit stitch and decrease methods before beginning the project.
