Product Description
Gnelfy and his sister Gnevie are nisses or tomtes or to me gnomes.
When worked in Aran/Worsted Weight they measure 13 inches/33cms from top to toe (not including hats); when worked in Double Knit/Light Worsted Weight they measure 11 inches/28cms (not including hats).
Any yarn works, but keep it all the same weight for each gnome. Suggested yarn for Gnevie’s hair would be a faux fur, King Cole Luxury Fur or James C Brett Faux Fur work very well. Eyelash yarn for Gnelfy’s beard works really well. I used Schachenmayr Brazilia.
Gnelfy and Gnevie are knitted flat, and assembled, full directions with photos are included in this pattern. They are knitted from their boots to the top of their heads in one piece, arms and outfits are knitted separately. I used mattress stitch throughout.
Gnelfy and Gnevie the Gnomes Knitted Toy Pattern
What Is Being Made
Gnelfy and Gnevie the Gnomes is a knitting pattern for creating a pair of decorative gnome toys inspired by Scandinavian folklore. These characters—known as nisses in Norwegian tradition and tomtes in Swedish tradition—are solitary, mischievous domestic sprites traditionally associated with the protection and welfare of farmsteads and their buildings. The pattern allows crafters to make both gnomes as a matching set. When worked in Aran or Worsted weight yarn, the finished gnomes measure 13 inches (33 centimeters) from top to toe, excluding the hats. When worked in Double Knit or Light Worsted weight yarn, they measure 11 inches (28 centimeters) from top to toe, excluding the hats.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses fundamental toy-making techniques to create three-dimensional gnome figures. The pattern includes comprehensive making-up instructions to guide crafters through assembly and finishing of the completed knitted pieces. Successful completion requires understanding how to join knitted sections together to form the gnome bodies, heads, and other components into cohesive toys.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different finished sizes and yarn preferences. Crafters can choose from Aran weight, Double Knit (DK) weight, or Super Chunky weight yarns. The designer recommends keeping yarn weight consistent throughout each gnome to ensure proper proportions and finished dimensions. The specific needle size requirements and yardage amounts are detailed within the complete pattern instructions.
