Product Description
It's been a few years since I knitted my last brioche shawl. So a brioche project was definitely overdue. :-) It should be a simple and uncomplicated shawl and so I mixed the simple brioche with a garter section and I-Cords. The colors of the shawl remind me of the pink glowing sunsets we were able to admire each evening in late summer. The contrast shows the gentle and magical transition from day to night.
Glowing Dusk Shawl by Rina Lehmann
Project Overview
The Glowing Dusk Shawl is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Rina Lehmann that combines brioche knitting with garter stitch and decorative I-Cord edging. This shawl captures the aesthetic of pink-hued summer sunsets, with color transitions that evoke the gentle shift from day to night. The design prioritizes a relaxing knitting experience through its use of straightforward techniques and uncomplicated construction methods.
Construction Method
This shawl is constructed in an unconventional manner, departing from traditional shawl-building approaches. Rather than working from the top down or bottom up in the standard fashion, the Glowing Dusk Shawl is built outward from different sections, beginning with an I-Cord worked from the middle. This unique construction method creates visual interest and allows the shawl to develop its distinctive texture and shape as sections are added progressively.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The pattern incorporates several core knitting techniques that work together to create the shawl's final appearance and drape:
- Brioche Knit: The primary stitch pattern used throughout the shawl, brioche knitting creates a luxurious, elastic fabric with distinctive vertical columns and excellent drape
- Garter Stitch: Mixed with the brioche sections to add textural contrast and visual dimension to the finished piece
- I-Cord: Used both as a construction element beginning at the center and as the finished edge, providing a polished, defined border
- Knitting and Purling: Fundamental stitches that form the foundation of the brioche and garter stitch sections
- Decreases: Shaping techniques employed to achieve the shawl's intended silhouette and fit
- Picking Up Stitches: Used to transition between sections and incorporate the I-Cord edging
Yarn and Materials
The Glowing Dusk Shawl is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, which provides an appropriate balance of drape and stitch definition for both the brioche and garter stitch sections. Sport weight yarn allows the brioche stitches to showcase their characteristic elasticity while maintaining the shawl's intended dimensions and fabric hand.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, this shawl is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more specialized techniques. While brioche knitting may be new to some crafters, the pattern's straightforward approach and the relaxing nature of the repetitive stitching make it an accessible introduction to this elegant technique.
