What is Being Made
The Global Nomad Handwarmers are versatile knitted mittens designed as part of Helen Stewart's Global Nomad mini-collection. These cozy colour block handwarmers function as convertible arm warmers that can be worn in multiple ways: pull them down over your fingers while out walking, or push them up your arms when indoors. Approximately 37cm (14.5") long, they are sized to fit an average woman's hand with a hand circumference of 20cm (8") and arm circumference of 25cm (10"). The pattern can easily be adjusted to create larger or smaller versions, making them customizable for different wearers. These handwarmers are ideal gifts and perfect for using up yarn stash leftovers.
Techniques and Construction
The Global Nomad Handwarmers feature straightforward knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The construction incorporates ribbing throughout the piece, which provides stretch and a classic finished appearance. Simple eyelet detail adorns the hands, adding visual interest and a delicate design element without requiring advanced lace-knitting skills. The colour block construction uses two distinct yarn colours to create visual contrast and design appeal. The pattern utilizes basic shaping techniques including knit two together (k2tog) decreases and yarn over (yo) increases for the eyelet details.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create ribbed texture
- Knit 2 Together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
- Yarn Over (yo) – creates the eyelet detail openings
- Ribbing – combines knit and purl stitches in alternating columns for elasticity and structure
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Global Nomad Handwarmers are knitted using DK weight yarn, a medium-weight option that works at a moderate gauge. The pattern calls for madelinetosh Tosh DK, which is composed of 100% Superwash Merino Wool. Each 100g skein yields 206 metres (225 yards). Colour A is specified as Charcoal in madelinetosh Tosh DK, requiring ½ of a 100g skein. The pattern also incorporates Colour B, allowing knitters to select a contrasting shade from the same yarn line for the colour block effect. The superwash treatment makes these handwarmers easy to care for and suitable for frequent wear and washing. Knitters can substitute other DK weight yarns of similar yardage and fibre content if preferred.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Global Nomad Handwarmers are accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with techniques beyond basic stockinette stitch. The combination of ribbing, simple shaping, and eyelet details provides an engaging project without overwhelming complexity. The pattern's clear written instructions and straightforward construction make it an excellent choice for intermediate knitters seeking to build confidence with textured stitches and colour work.
