Product Description
This is a versatile and easy to make shawl. Make it small like a scarf or add more stripes for a big wrap. You can also make it in different shades of the same colour to get a gradient effect or just go crazy and use up all your leftover yarn. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
It's knitted in horizontal stripes that will make an asymetric shawl and grows as more stripes are added. The pattern includes yardage for the first 8 stripes, so you can use up small amounts of leftover yarn.
Gauge is not important and it looks good in DK and fingering weight yarn, although you can also try other types of yarn if you feel adventurous.
Glasgowgate Shawlette by Esther Alvarez
What is Being Made
The Glasgowgate shawlette is a versatile knitted shawl design that offers multiple styling options depending on the crafter's preferences and yarn availability. This project can be constructed as a small scarf-sized piece or expanded into a larger wrap by adding additional stripes. The design accommodates creative customization, allowing makers to work with gradient effects using different shades of the same color or to incorporate leftover yarn in various colors for a unique, personalized result.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses straightforward construction methods suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern is highly customizable, allowing crafters to easily adjust dimensions to create either a smaller or larger finished piece based on their preferences. The design's flexibility makes it an excellent project for using up yarn stash, as makers can incorporate multiple colors and weights while maintaining the integrity of the overall design.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch employed in the Glasgowgate shawlette is garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric. The pattern utilizes markers throughout construction to help track stitch placement and pattern repeats, with 18 markers and 1 clip or progress keeper required to identify specific working points during knitting.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for approximately 200 grams (800 meters or 875 yards) of DK weight yarn. The sample shown was created using Rico Creative Degrade Wool in grey. Crafters have flexibility in yarn selection, as fingering weight yarn also produces good results when worked on the same needle size. The pattern includes a detailed table indicating yarn requirements for each individual stripe, enabling makers to plan their color work and stash usage effectively.
Tools and Gauge
Construction requires 3.5 mm circular needles measuring at least 80 centimeters (32 inches) long. The recommended gauge is 23 stitches by 42 rows in garter stitch, though the pattern notes this gauge is not essential for successful completion. Additional tools needed include 18 stitch markers and 1 clip or progress keeper to track working points throughout the knitting process.
