Gift Horse Pony Toy Knitting Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Gift Horse Pony Toy is a poseable stuffed knitted horse designed by Gift Horse Kits. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished toy measuring 20cm x 20cm, making it an ideal handmade gift or decorative piece. The pony features articulated limbs and is constructed from multiple knitted components that are assembled together.

Construction Method

The toy is constructed using a modular building approach. The horse's body is knitted in two separate pieces—a front section and a back section—which are then joined together. Four individual legs are knitted separately and subsequently sewn onto the sides of the completed body. This construction technique allows for flexibility in shaping and ensures the toy achieves its poseable quality.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The following stitches and abbreviations are featured throughout the design:

  • Inc1 (Increase by 1): Created by knitting into both the front and back of a single stitch, also known as Kfb, this technique transforms one stitch into two stitches and is used to increase stitch count for shaping
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together): A decrease method that combines two stitches into one by knitting them together, used to reduce stitch count and shape the toy's contours
  • P2tog (Purl Two Together): The purl equivalent of K2tog, this decrease technique combines two purl stitches into one and contributes to the toy's three-dimensional shaping

Materials Required

The Gift Horse Pony Toy pattern calls for a combination of yarn weights to achieve its finished appearance and structure:

  • Primary yarn: One 50g ball of Sirdar Snuggly 100% Merino in colour 71 Lagoon (DK/4 ply weight). Alternative yarn options in the same weight include Sirdar Snuggly DK in Sky or Sirdar Snuggly Soothing DK in Baby Blue, providing flexibility for color preferences while maintaining consistent gauge
  • Accent yarn: A couple of metres of Hayfield Bonus Chunky in Signal Red 977, used for details such as the mane or other decorative elements
  • Eye detail yarn: Approximately one metre of black DK weight yarn for creating the horse's eyes
  • Needles: 3mm straight knitting needles, appropriately sized for working with DK and 4 ply weight yarns
  • Notions and finishing supplies: Four small circular buttons (patterned or plain) for leg joints or embellishment, toy stuffing for filling the knitted pieces, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a sewing needle for assembling the toy components

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle projects involving shaping techniques, multiple pieces, and assembly work. The combination of increases, decreases, and multi-part construction provides an engaging challenge without requiring advanced techniques.
