Gansey Diamonds Knitted Sweater by Pat Menchini

What is Being Made

The Gansey Diamonds is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Pat Menchini, available in six size options ranging from 76-81 cm to 129-134 cm bust measurements. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted garment with a classic gansey construction, featuring decorative diamond patterning throughout the design. The sweater offers versatile sizing for various body types, with finished bust measurements ranging from 91 cm to 146 cm.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This gansey-style sweater employs traditional knitting methods combined with contemporary pattern work. The construction utilizes multiple needle sizes to achieve proper tension and shaping, with the main fabric worked on 4 mm needles. The design incorporates stitch holders for managing stitches during assembly, and the pattern requires working across multiple sizes with graduated increases for different bust measurements. The diamond motif is integrated into the body and sleeve sections, creating visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity of the garment.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette Stitch (st st) – The primary stitch used for the main body and sleeves, creating a smooth, classic knit fabric
  • Diamond Patterning – Decorative stitch work that forms the signature diamond design throughout the sweater
  • Ribbing – Used for finishing edges and cuffs to provide elasticity and structure

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Gansey Diamonds pattern calls for West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft DK, a premium yarn composed of 100% Shetland wool. This DK weight yarn is supplied in 100g hanks, each containing 225 metres or 246 yards of fiber. The pattern specifies shade Maywick 512 and requires between 5 to 7 hanks depending on the size being knitted, allowing crafters to select the appropriate yardage for their chosen measurements.

Needles and Tools Required

The project requires four different sizes of knitting needles to accommodate various stages of construction and achieve proper tension:

  • 3 mm needles (UK 11, US 2½) – Used for initial ribbing and edge work
  • 3.25 mm needles (UK 10, US 3) – Transitional needle size for pattern setup
  • 4 mm needles (UK 8, US 6) – Primary needles for main body and sleeve fabric worked in stockinette stitch
  • 4.5 mm needles (UK 7, US 7) – Larger needles for specific shaping sections

Additional tools include 2 stitch holders for managing active stitches during assembly and seaming.

Tension and Gauge Information

Achieving the correct tension is essential for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) when working stockinette stitch on 4 mm needles. Additionally, the diamond pattern requires 24 stitches in width to 10 cm (4 inches). Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches these specifications, as variations will affect the final garment measurements and fit.

Garment Dimensions

The sweater features a length to shoulder shaping ranging from 57 to 61 cm depending on size, with sleeve seams measuring 46 to 47 cm. These proportions create a classic pullover silhouette suitable for various body types and personal styling preferences.
