Product Description

The Furcula tee was inspired by the old wishbone tradition, with the lace resembling wishbones. The tee is knit bottom-up in the round before splitting for the sleeves. I wanted this pattern to work as a lucky charm for everyone, giving everyone the option to make the tee that they feel most comfortable in, whether it's a cropped or full length version, a classic close fit or a relaxed oversized fit. This tee will work great with high waisted jeans, skirts or layered over dresses. The lace section is both written out and charted in the pattern.

To be worn with 0-5cm / 0-2” positive ease at bust for a close fit. If you prefer an oversized fit, aim for 15-20cm / 6-8” positive ease at bust.

Furcula Knit Top by Anouschka Vandenbosch

What Is Being Made

The Furcula is a knitted tee inspired by the ancient furcula (wishbone) tradition, a symbol of good luck that dates back over 2700 years to the Etruscans. This garment features lace patterning that resembles wishbones, designed to serve as a wearable lucky charm. The pattern offers versatility in construction, allowing knitters to customize the finished piece according to personal preference and comfort level.

Construction Technique

The Furcula tee is knit bottom-up in the round, a construction method that creates a seamless body before the piece splits for sleeve shaping. This approach minimizes seaming and creates a smooth, continuous fabric from hem to armhole. The bottom-up circular construction allows for easy length adjustments and provides flexibility for creating either a cropped or full-length version of the garment.

Lace and Stitch Details

The defining feature of this design is its lace patterning that echoes the wishbone motif central to the garment's inspiration. The lace work adds visual interest and an elegant, airy quality to the knit fabric. The pattern accommodates different fit preferences, offering options for a classic close fit or alternative silhouettes, allowing each knitter to create a version suited to their desired aesthetic and comfort.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight fingering to sport-weight yarn that creates a refined drape ideal for a fitted tee. The 4-ply weight allows the lace pattern to be clearly visible while maintaining enough structure for a wearable garment. Circular needles appropriate to the yarn weight are required for the bottom-up in-the-round construction method.

Skill Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Furcula requires competency with circular knitting, lace pattern reading, and basic shaping techniques. Knitters should be comfortable working lace stitches in the round and managing increases and decreases for sleeve cap shaping.
