Product Description
When I created this, I had in mind a pattern that would slowly grow in design and create a beautifully draping asymmetrical shawl that could either be worn over the shoulders or around the neck. I also wanted the pattern to be simple and repetitive enough that it wouldn’t be intimidating to new knitters. (It looks more complicated than it is.)
As I worked on this pattern, New Brunswick has seen a bit of a heat wave, and I have been thankful every day for the refreshing natural air conditioning of the breezes that we get off the Bay of Fundy. Yes we have also had a lot of fog, but I actually enjoy watching it literally roll in. This welcome breeze from the Bay of Fundy is the inspiration for this shawl, and the cathedral windows motif reflects this city of Saint John's heritage. The combination of fibres - holdin a strand of fingering weight merino/bamboo/nylon blend and a strand of mohair together - really makes for a lovely drape and sheen (and fuzzy halo)!
Fundy Breeze Shawl by Andrea Arbour
Project Overview
The Fundy Breeze Shawl is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Andrea Arbour. This downloadable PDF pattern creates an elegant lace shawl suitable for knitters with some experience in working with lace techniques and shaping.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a knitted shawl featuring lace construction. The shawl incorporates both a main body and an edging, with the designer recommending stitch markers to help organize the different pattern sections during construction.
Yarn Materials
The Fundy Breeze Shawl uses two complementary yarns from Good Fibrations Hand-dyed collection:
- Good Fibrations Hand-dyed Merino Bamboo: One skein in fingering weight, comprising 70% merino wool, 20% bamboo, and 10% nylon. This skein provides 470 yards from 115 grams of fiber, offering softness and breathability to the finished shawl.
- Good Fibrations Hand-dyed Silk Mohair: One skein in laceweight, comprising 70% kid mohair and 30% silk. This skein also provides 470 yards from 55 grams of fiber, adding delicate drape and subtle sheen to the lace sections.
The combination of these two hand-dyed yarns creates visual interest and textural variation throughout the shawl.
Needles and Notions
The pattern calls for 5mm circular needles with 24-inch cables, though needle size may be adjusted to achieve the correct gauge. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for organizing pattern repeats. The designer suggests using up to 15 stitch markers total to separate pattern and chart repeats, with a row counter stitch marker specifically placed after the 3rd stitch to delineate the edging section.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over the specified stitch pattern. Achieving this gauge is essential for proper shawl dimensions and drape.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
As an intermediate-level lace shawl, the Fundy Breeze Shawl employs lace knitting techniques typical of shawl construction. The pattern uses chart-based instructions to guide the lace pattern repeats, which is a common method for communicating complex stitch sequences in lace knitting. The shawl features distinct sections: an edging and a main body, each with its own pattern instructions. Knitters working this pattern should be comfortable reading charts, managing multiple stitch markers, and executing the yarn overs and decreases that create the characteristic openwork of lace knitting.
