Full Heart Pullover for Kids by Danielle Chalson
What is Being Made
The Full Heart Pullover for Kids is a classic knitted sweater designed for babies and children ranging from 6-12 months through 8-10 years old. This pullover features decorative heart-shaped cables as a central design element, making it an ideal handmade garment for gifting to young children. The sweater is designed with practical positive ease built into the chest circumference, allowing for comfortable layering and room for growth as children develop. Finished chest circumferences range from 21 inches (53.25 cm) for the smallest size up to 31¾ inches (80.75 cm) for the largest size.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create a well-constructed children's garment. The design incorporates cable knitting as the primary decorative technique, with heart-shaped cables serving as the focal point of the pullover. The sweater utilizes modified drop shoulder shaping in the armholes to ensure proper fit and comfort for growing children. Circular knitting is used for the body and sleeves, with the ribbing sections worked using double-pointed needles (DPNs) for traditional ribbed edging. The construction method allows for seamless or nearly seamless assembly, which is ideal for children's garments where comfort is paramount.
Stitches Used
The Full Heart Pullover incorporates ribbing as a foundational stitch pattern, used for the cuffs, hem, and neckline to create elasticity and a finished appearance. The heart-shaped cables are the signature stitch element of this design, created through cable crossing techniques that require slipping stitches onto cable needles and working stitches in a specific sequence to form the distinctive heart motif. The body of the sweater likely uses stockinette stitch as the base fabric, which provides a smooth, classic canvas that allows the cable hearts to stand out visually.
Materials and Tools
The Full Heart Pullover is designed to be worked in worsted-weight yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size from 420 yards (385 meters) for the 6-12 month size up to 910 yards (835 meters) for the 8-10 year size. The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using De Rerum Natura Gilliatt, a 100% merino wool yarn that provides 273 yards per approximately 100 grams (3.5 ounces). Merino wool offers softness and breathability, making it an excellent choice for children's knitwear.
The pattern requires US 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles in two lengths: 16 inches (40 cm) and 24 inches (60 cm), allowing for magic loop or two-circular-needle techniques depending on knitter preference. Double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the same US 6 (4.0 mm) size are needed for working the ribbed sections, particularly at the neckline and cuffs. These needle sizes are appropriate for worsted-weight yarn and will produce the correct gauge necessary for proper fit across all size ranges.
