Fruity Shawl by HelstrupDesign
What is Being Made
The Fruity is a crescent-shaped shawl or large scarf designed by HelstrupDesign, available as a downloadable PDF knitting pattern. This advanced-level project offers versatility in construction and customization, with finished pieces ranging from a small shawl measuring 150 centimeters in width and 55 centimeters in height, up to an extra-large version spanning 290 centimeters in width and 75 centimeters in height. All measurements are taken after blocking. The Fruity shawl can be worked in a single color or with two contrasting colors for added visual interest.
Construction Technique
The Fruity shawl employs a distinctive bottom-up construction method. The knitter begins by working the decorative lace edge first, then knits the remainder of the shawl upward from this foundation. For crafters interested in a two-color version, the technique involves working the lace edge in one color, then picking up stitches along the completed lace edge and continuing the rest of the shawl in a contrasting second color. This approach allows the lace edging to serve as a visual frame or accent to the main body of the shawl.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern features lace stitchwork as a primary design element, with the lace edge forming the decorative foundation of the shawl. The lace construction requires advanced knitting skills, making this pattern suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable reading lace charts and managing yarn overs, decreases, and other lace techniques that create the openwork patterns characteristic of shawl design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Fruity shawl is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, requiring approximately 280 to 300 meters per 100 grams of yarn. Suitable yarn choices include wool or wool-blend fibers such as Malabrigo Silky Merino, Malabrigo Arroyo, Lang Yarns Merino 150, Semilla from BC Garn, and Extrafine Merino 150 from Hjertegarn. The pictured small-size version was created using hand-dyed yarn with natural dyes at 50% silk content, demonstrating the beautiful results possible with premium yarn selections. Knitters will need appropriate needles for sport weight yarn to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape in the finished shawl.
