Product Description

This cardigan is inspired by the Faroese sweaters, with two colour fair isle pattern in stripes, in one main colour and one contrast colour. I was inspired by our cold and long winters in the Faroe Islands, when I designed the pattern for this cardigan. The name Frost is an international word as well as a Faroese word.

Frost Cardigan for Kids by Faroeknit

What is Being Made

The Frost Cardigan is a fitted children's cardigan designed by Faroeknit, available in six sizes ranging from 1 year to 10 years old. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a classic buttoned cardigan suitable for young children, with chest circumferences ranging from 22.5 inches (56 cm) for the smallest size to 30.5 inches (76 cm) for the largest size. The cardigan lengths vary from 14 inches (34 cm) for 1-year-olds to 21.5 inches (54 cm) for 10-year-olds, making it a versatile pattern that grows with children through multiple age ranges.

Craft and Techniques

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern utilizes both flat and circular knitting methods, incorporating colorwork through the use of a main color and contrast color throughout the design. Knitters have the flexibility to work the pattern using either traditional double-pointed needles or the modern magic loop method with a long circular needle, allowing for personal preference in construction technique.

Stitches Used

The Frost Cardigan pattern uses basic knitting stitches as its foundation. The primary stitches employed are:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch that forms the primary fabric structure
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition

These essential stitches are combined to create the cardigan's overall construction and visual interest through the two-color colorwork design.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Frost Cardigan pattern calls for DK weight yarn, which is a medium-light yarn weight ideal for children's garments. The recommended yarn options include Sandnes Alpakka or Navia Silkiull, though the pattern notes that other DK weight yarns can be substituted as long as the correct gauge is maintained. Yarn requirements vary by size, with the 1-year size requiring 100 grams of main color and 50 grams of contrast color, scaling up to the 10-year size which needs 350 grams of main color and 150 grams of contrast color.

Essential tools include a 32-inch long circular needle in US size 4, along with US size 5 double-pointed needles (or a long circular needle for the magic loop alternative). Additional materials needed are a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and 5 to 6 buttons for the cardigan closure, depending on the size being constructed.

Gauge and Sizing Information

Achieving the correct gauge is critical for this project's success. The pattern specifies a gauge of 23 stitches and 30 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) on a US size 4 needle. Knitters should adjust their needle size accordingly to match this gauge, as variations will affect the finished cardigan's fit and dimensions. The pattern notes that those preferring a cardigan with more positive ease (additional room for comfort) can use larger needles while maintaining the same stitch count, creating a looser, more relaxed fit.
