Product Description
It‘s cold outside. Time to wrap your hands in warm mittens to brave the cold. Suddenly a phone call comes in or you want to capture your friend doing a flip while iceskating. Unwrapping is no option! These classic shaped mittens come with a twist: the mittens can be converted into mitts. Flip them over to use your fingertips.
The mittens are completely worked in rounds. Starting at the bottom with corrugated ribbing, the Fair Isle pattern is revealed as the pattern comes to the tip. The colorwork is inspired by the graphic artist M.C. Escher. His art had a strong mathematical component.
The aran-weight yarn gives a warm thickness and makes it a quick project. Choose two contrasting colors to reveal the fractal.
Fractal Mittens by Sabrina Schumacher
What is Being Made
Fractal Mittens are convertible knitted mittens designed by Sabrina Schumacher that function as both traditional mittens and fingerless mitts. The innovative design allows you to flip the mittens over to expose your fingertips, making them a versatile accessory for varying temperature needs. The mittens feature classic mitten shaping worked seamlessly in the round using aran-weight yarn.
Design Inspiration and Colourwork
The colourwork pattern draws inspiration from the mathematical art of graphic artist M.C. Escher, known for his intricate geometric compositions. The design features geometric fair isle motifs that progressively enlarge as they approach the mitten tip, creating a fractal-like visual effect. This mathematical approach to the pattern design adds visual interest and complexity to the finished mittens.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
These mittens are worked entirely in the round, eliminating the need for seaming. The construction begins with corrugated ribbing at the cuff, which provides elasticity and a polished finish. The primary stitch technique used throughout is fair isle colourwork, a stranded knitting method that incorporates two contrasting yarn colours to create the geometric pattern. The fair isle pattern gradually reveals itself as you progress from the cuff toward the tip of the mittens.
Materials
- Yarn: Donegal Yarns Aran Tweed (100% wool, 160 m / 174 yards per 100 g)
- 1 skein in Sunflower (light colour) — 50 g / 80 m / 87 yards used for sample
- 1 skein in Petrol Blue Hill (dark colour) — 50 g / 80 m / 87 yards used for sample
- Needles: 4.5 mm / US #7 double-pointed needles (DPNs), or size to obtain gauge
- Additional Tools: 4.0 mm / US #6 needles and 4.0 mm crochet hook
Yarn Weight and Project Characteristics
The mittens are worked in aran-weight yarn, which provides substantial warmth and thickness ideal for cold-weather wear. This yarn weight classification makes the project work up relatively quickly compared to lighter-weight alternatives, while still delivering the durability and insulation needed for winter mittens. The two-colour contrast between Sunflower and Petrol Blue Hill creates striking visual definition in the fair isle pattern.
Difficulty Level
Fractal Mittens are classified as an advanced knitting project. The combination of seamless in-the-round construction, corrugated ribbing, and fair isle colourwork requires solid foundational knitting skills and experience managing multiple colours and stitch techniques simultaneously.
