Product Description

These socks feature simple cables running the length of the front and down the back, through the heel flap. Just the thing for those backless clogs, to show off a pretty sock heel. The pattern sort of reminds me of a path winding through the forest.

Finished Size: S (M, L) [7” (8”, 9” around), unstretched]

Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock, 80% Superwash Merino/20% Nylon, 435 yards/100g (Sample knit in Midway)

Needles: Set of 5 double-pointed needles or two circular needles size 2 US (2.75 mm), or size to obtain gauge

Note: While the stockinette gauge is correct, these socks are smaller than a typical sock. The cables cause the stitches to pull. I suggest knitting one size larger than your usual sock.

Forest Path Socks by Corrine Walcher

What is Being Made

Forest Path is a pair of knitted socks designed to showcase decorative cable work on the foot. The socks feature simple cables that run the length of the front and down the back, continuing through the heel flap. With open-backed construction, these socks are specifically designed to display an attractive heel when worn with backless clogs or similar footwear. The pattern's cable design creates a visual effect reminiscent of a winding path through a forest, giving the project its distinctive name.

Finished Dimensions

Forest Path socks are available in three sizes to accommodate different foot widths:

  • Size S: 7 inches around (unstretched)
  • Size M: 8 inches around (unstretched)
  • Size L: 9 inches around (unstretched)

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level sock pattern employs several key knitting techniques. The socks are knit in the round, a fundamental method for seamless sock construction that creates a tubular fabric. Cable work forms the primary decorative element, with cables running vertically along both the front and back of the sock, including through the heel flap section. The pattern uses standard sock construction methods including heel flap shaping and foot shaping to create a fitted garment.

Stitches and Abbreviations

Forest Path utilizes a range of fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches:

  • K (Knit): The basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
  • P (Purl): The reverse of the knit stitch, used for texture variation
  • Sl (Slip): Slipping stitches as if to purl with yarn in back
  • PM (Place Marker): Marking specific points in the pattern
  • SM (Slip Marker): Moving markers forward as knitting progresses
  • K2tog (Knit Two Together): A right-leaning decrease
  • P2tog (Purl Two Together): A purl decrease
  • SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit): A left-leaning decrease
  • 2/2 LC (Two Over Two Left Cross): A cable cross stitch creating the signature cable pattern

These stitches combine to create the cable texture and shaping necessary for well-fitting socks with decorative detail.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn, a premium sock yarn composed of 80% Superwash Merino wool and 20% nylon. This blend offers the softness and temperature regulation of merino wool combined with nylon's durability and elasticity—essential properties for socks that will withstand regular wear and washing. Each 100-gram skein provides 435 yards of yarn, sufficient for a pair of socks. The sample socks shown were knit in the colorway Midway.

Forest Path accommodates two yarn weights: 3-ply and 4-ply sock yarns, allowing knitters flexibility in fiber selection while maintaining the intended finished dimensions.

Needles and Gauge

Knitters can choose between two needle methods for this in-the-round project: a set of five double-pointed needles or two circular needles, both in size 2 US (2.75 mm), or adjusted to match the pattern's required gauge. The target gauge is 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, knit in the round. Achieving proper gauge is essential for socks that fit correctly and display the cable pattern as intended.

Difficulty Level

Classified as an intermediate project, Forest Path assumes knitters have foundational skills in circular knitting, basic decreases, and cable techniques. The combination of in-the-round construction, cable work, and heel flap shaping makes this pattern suitable for knitters who have completed several basic sock projects and are ready to add decorative elements to their work.
