Folk Tales Blanket CAL by Anna Nikipirowicz – Part 4: Twists and Trebles & Scripts and Spikes
Part Four of the Folk Tales Magical Mosaic Blanket Crochet Along (CAL), designed by Anna Nikipirowicz for West Yorkshire Spinners, continues an ambitious and beautifully themed project that blends traditional crochet craft with modern, vibrant design. This installment — a free downloadable PDF — introduces two distinct square designs: Twists and Trebles and Scripts and Spikes, each contributing unique texture and visual character to the growing blanket.
About the Folk Tales Blanket CAL
The Folk Tales Blanket is a crochet-along project broken into multiple parts, with each part adding new squares and techniques to an ever-expanding blanket or throw. The concept is deeply rooted in the heritage of handcraft traditions, evoking the image of past generations sitting together, making and storytelling simultaneously. Anna Nikipirowicz has designed this project to honour that tradition while giving it a fresh, contemporary edge through bold colour combinations and modern geometric shapes. The blanket is intended to be cherished and even passed down through generations — much like the folk tales that inspired its name.
Makers are encouraged to share their progress and stories using the hashtag #WYSFolktales, building a community of crocheters connected through craft and narrative.
What Is Being Made
Part Four contributes additional crochet squares to the larger Folk Tales Magical Mosaic Blanket. When all parts of the CAL are completed and joined, the result is a full-sized blanket or throw featuring a rich mosaic of different square designs, each with its own texture, stitch pattern, and visual story. The finished blanket is a striking combination of traditional craft sensibility and bold, modern colour work.
Designs Featured in Part Four
Twists and Trebles
The Twists and Trebles square is a design that celebrates two of crochet's most expressive elements: twisted stitch construction and the classic treble crochet stitch. Treble crochet (known as double crochet in US terminology) is a tall, open stitch that creates a light, elegant fabric with excellent drape. When combined with twisted or crossed stitch arrangements, the result is a square with visual depth and a sense of movement — as though the stitches themselves are winding through the fabric like threads of a story.
- Technique: Twisted stitch construction combined with treble crochet
- Effect: Textured, dynamic surface with a sense of interwoven structure
- Style: Traditional craft technique given a modern geometric interpretation
Scripts and Spikes
The Scripts and Spikes square introduces another layer of textural contrast to the blanket. Spike stitches are a well-loved crochet technique in which the hook is inserted into a row below the current working row, pulling up a long loop before completing the stitch. This creates a distinctive elongated stitch that appears to "spike" downward through the fabric, adding colour depth and a layered, almost woven appearance. The Scripts element of the name suggests flowing, script-like lines or motifs worked into the square's design, adding a calligraphic quality to the geometric mosaic aesthetic.
- Technique: Spike stitch crochet, working into rows below the current row
- Effect: Elongated stitches that create colour layering and textural depth
- Style: Graphic and bold, with a flowing, script-inspired visual quality
Stitches and Techniques Used
Part Four of the Folk Tales CAL draws on a range of intermediate-level crochet stitches and techniques. This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it well-suited to crocheters who are comfortable with the basics and ready to explore more expressive stitch work.
- Treble crochet – a foundational tall stitch used to build structure and height within the square
- Twisted or crossed stitches – stitches worked out of sequence or crossed over one another
