Flower Show Blanket by Knitwit Designs
Project Overview
The Flower Show Blanket is a knitted throw designed by Margaret Holzmann for Knitwit Designs. This intermediate-level project creates a bright, retro-inspired blanket measuring 62 x 62 inches (157 x 157 centimeters). Crafters can choose from three distinct color stories—Summertime, Succulent, or Spring Bouquet—each offering a unique palette of vibrant hues that celebrate floral themes.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft method. The blanket incorporates multiple advanced knitting techniques that elevate it to an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire.
Techniques and Stitches Used
The Flower Show Blanket employs a variety of knitting and finishing techniques to achieve its finished design:
- Purl and Knit Stitches (P&K): The foundation of the blanket's textured surface, combining knit and purl stitches to create visual interest and dimension
- Wrap and Turn (W&T): A shaping technique used to create curves and contours without increasing or decreasing stitches, essential for the blanket's petal-inspired design elements
- Three-Needle Bind-Off (3-Needle BO): An advanced finishing technique that joins two sets of live stitches together, creating a strong, professional seam often used on edges and corners
- Sewing: Used to join sections of the blanket and attach finished elements with precision
- Crochet Slip Stitch: Applied specifically for photos and edge finishing, adding a refined border detail to the completed blanket
Yarn and Materials
The Flower Show Blanket is designed to be worked with Aran weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition and creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for a throw blanket. The recommended yarn is Jaggerspun Yarns Mousam Falls Aran, a 100% Superwash wool yarn that offers durability and easy care. Each hank contains 187 yards (171 meters) and weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams).
Yarn requirements vary by color story. The Summertime palette requires between 1 and 3 hanks per color across ten color options (A through K). The Succulent palette uses between 1 and 4 hanks per color across nine colors. The Spring Bouquet palette requires between 1 and 4 hanks per color across nine colors. This flexible yardage structure allows crafters to customize their blanket while maintaining consistent fiber quality and weight.
Color Palettes
Each color story offers a carefully curated selection of hues from the Jaggerspun Yarns Mousam Falls Aran line:
Summertime Palette: Features Crème/Ecru, Admiral (dark blue), French Blue (medium blue), Plum (deep purple), Cardinal (red), Fushsia (hot pink), Cassis (medium pink), Persimmon (orange), Chrome (strong yellow), and Lemon (pale yellow).
Succulent Palette: Includes Crème/Ecru, Admiral (dark blue), French Blue (medium blue), Aster (pale purple), Cardinal (red), Fushsia (hot pink), Cassis (medium pink), Persimmon (orange), and Chrome (strong yellow).
Spring Bouquet Palette: Combines Crème/Ecru, Admiral (dark blue), Plum (deep purple), Cardinal (red), Fushsia (hot pink), Cassis (medium pink), Persimmon (orange), Lemon (pale yellow), and additional colors for depth and variation.
