Product Description

Crochet pattern, crochet square, dish cloth, face cloth, blanket square, wash cloth The Flower, in inspiration of the swiss card deck

My patterns are all in German and English, in US terms. My patterns are all created by myself which I really enjoy. It takes a while to create a pattern, crochet the pattern and write everything down but if there are any issues please do not hesitate to send me a message either here or on my Instagram account _Lovelyyarns.

I love creating squares and eventually sew them together to a beautiful baby blanket, car blanket, throw or big blanket.

This is a pattern to Crochet your own square which can be used as face cloth, dish cloth, wash cloth, wall decoration or my personal favourite as a square for blankets. Perfect as a gift or just to keep

Flower Crochet Granny Square Dishcloth by Karin Burkart

What Is Being Made

This is a crochet square pattern designed by Karin Burkart for use as a dishcloth, facecloth, or washcloth. The versatile square can also be combined with multiple completed squares to create a larger baby blanket by crocheting several squares and sewing them together. Each finished square measures approximately 20 x 20 cm when worked in Aran yarn.

Crochet Techniques Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters. The design features the popcorn stitch as a decorative element, which creates textured, dimensional details throughout the square. This stitch is constructed by working five double crochet stitches into the same stitch, then removing the hook and reinserting it into the first double crochet from behind before pulling through the last stitch and chaining one to complete the popcorn.

The pattern uses a straightforward row-by-row construction method, beginning with a foundation chain and progressing through single crochet rows with strategically placed popcorn stitches to create the flower or decorative pattern across the square.

Stitches Used

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for the foundation and throughout the pattern
  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch forming the base fabric
  • Double crochet (dc) – used as the component stitch within the popcorn stitch detail
  • Popcorn stitch (po) – the decorative textured stitch that creates the flower or dimensional elements

Materials and Yarn

The pattern is designed to work with DK weight yarn, though the original sample shown uses Aran weight cotton yarn. Approximately 60 grams of Aran cotton yarn is required to complete one square. Cotton yarn is recommended as the ideal fiber choice for this project, making it particularly suitable for dishcloths and facecloths that will be frequently washed and used in damp environments.

A 3.5 mm crochet hook is used when working with Aran yarn. The pattern notes that if working with DK yarn instead, the hook size should be adjusted accordingly to achieve proper gauge and finished dimensions.

Pattern Construction

The square begins with a foundation chain of 34 stitches. The pattern then progresses through 8 rows of single crochet with popcorn stitch accents strategically placed to create the flower design. The popcorn stitches are positioned in specific locations across rows 4 and 6 to form the decorative pattern, while rows 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 consist of solid single crochet stitches that build the base fabric and allow the popcorn details to stand out as dimensional focal points.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is classified as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent project for those new to crochet. The reliance on basic stitches—primarily single crochet with the addition of the popcorn stitch technique—provides an accessible introduction to textured stitch work without overwhelming complexity.
