Product Description
A very cosy and unique blanket/throw featuring a flock of sheep including a black one. Perfect for snuggling up on the sofa with your little one and would make a stunning feature in your home.
Easy to knit in stocking stitch and there are large coloured intarsia charts to follow for the sheep. A moss stitch border around the blanket is knitted as you go along and this avoids the edges curling.
Two sizes for the Throw are included in the pattern:
Small Throw measures 82 cm wide x 90 cm long (32 in wide x 36 in long)
Large Throw measures 92 cm wide x 112 cm long (36 in wide x 44 in long)
Yarn required is Worsted/Aran (10 ply yarn). Three different suggestions for yarns are given in the pattern together with links to suppliers.
Knitting Needles – 1 circular 5 mm (UK6 – US8) 100 cm long The blanket is knitted backwards and forwards on the circular needle
Tension - 18 sts and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch
Flock of Sheep Throw by iKnitDesigns
Project Overview
The Flock of Sheep Throw is a charming knitted blanket designed by Denny Gould of iKnitDesigns. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a cozy throw featuring a delightful flock of sheep motif against a solid background. The design is available in two size options, making it adaptable for different spaces and preferences. The throw is worked flat on circular needles using straightforward knitting techniques, making it an accessible project for knitters with some experience.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a finished throw blanket suitable for draping over furniture or using as a decorative accent piece. The Small Throw measures 82 cm wide by 90 cm long (32 inches by 36 inches), while the Large Throw measures 92 cm wide by 112 cm long (36 inches by 44 inches). The design features a charming sheep motif worked into the fabric, creating visual interest against the background color.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This project is constructed using stockinette stitch as the primary stitch pattern, which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that serves as the base for the design. The throw is knitted flat, meaning it is worked forwards and backwards on the circular needle rather than in the round. This flat construction method is ideal for rectangular projects like throws and allows for easy color changes to create the sheep motif. The pattern includes instructions for both the small and large sizes, with the larger version's instructions provided in square brackets for easy reference.
Materials Required
The Flock of Sheep Throw uses Sprightly Yarns Acrylic/Worsted Weight yarn in three colors. Each skein contains 100 grams (3.5 ounces) and provides 201 yards (184 meters) of yardage. For the Small Throw, you will need 4 skeins of Teal (501-001) for the background, 1 skein of White (501-025) for the sheep, and 1 skein of Black (501-007) for details. The Large Throw requires 5 skeins of Teal for the background, with 1 skein each of White and Black for the sheep motif.
The pattern specifies a 5 mm (UK size 6 / US size 8) circular knitting needle with a 100 cm (47 inch) long cord. The circular needle is used for its length to accommodate the width of the throw while working flat.
Yarn Weight and Tension
This project uses aran weight yarn, which is a medium weight that works up quickly and creates a fabric with good drape and structure. The pattern specifies a tension of 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct tension is important for obtaining the finished dimensions specified in the pattern and ensuring the throw has the intended appearance and weight.
Alternative Yarn Options
While the pattern calls for Sprightly Yarns, alternative yarns are suggested for knitters seeking different fiber content or characteristics. MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran, available from LoveKnitting, is recommended as a luxury alternative, offering 100% Merino Wool for those preferring natural fiber over acrylic.
