Product Description

This pattern is for any weight yarn! A buttoning cowl, in a squishy reversible stitch pattern which plays very nicely with variegated yarns, and makes striping look like stranded colorwork!

Flippable is perfect for an adventurous beginner knitter, wanting to make something that may look harder than it really is, since it's actually no more difficult than 1x1 ribbing, and maybe learn a couple of new things. The trickiest part of this pattern is the one-row buttonhole (it isn't really that hard, but may be a step above beginner level), which you can skip if you'd like, and close the cowl with a shawl pin or brooch instead.

Although the samples are all fitted sizes, this piece can be made any size you like - your cast-on number determines the length (or circumference, around your neck), so cast on as many as you want, going much longer for a big, loopy cowl instead of a fitted style.

Flippable can be made in any weight yarn, and the fabric will be about the thickness of two pie

Flippable Cowl by Lee Meredith

What is Being Made

Flippable is a reversible buttoning cowl designed by Lee Meredith. This neckwear project creates a squishy, wearable cowl that can be flipped to display different sides, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling preferences and occasions.

Ideal Maker Profile

This pattern is perfect for an adventurous beginner knitter or intermediate knitter who wants to create a finished piece that looks more complex than its construction actually is. The project teaches new techniques while remaining accessible to those with basic knitting experience, such as familiarity with 1x1 ribbing.

Knitting Techniques

The Flippable cowl employs a single stitch pattern that plays beautifully with variegated yarns, creating the visual illusion of stranded colorwork without the complexity of traditional two-color knitting. This clever design approach makes striping and color variation appear intentional and sophisticated. The most technically demanding element of the project is the one-row buttonhole, though this technique is presented as more straightforward than it may initially appear.

Stitches Used

  • 1x1 ribbing as the foundational stitch pattern
  • One-row buttonhole construction for the button closures

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights, allowing crafters to choose based on desired finished size and available materials. Yardage requirements vary by weight:

  • Bulky weight: 100–160 yards (90–145 meters)
  • Worsted weight: 120–220 yards (110–200 meters)
  • Sport weight: 200–300 yards (180–275 meters)
  • Fingering weight: 300–450 yards (275–410 meters)
  • Additional yardage recommended for larger size variations

Notions and Tools:

  • Circular needles sized to match the chosen yarn weight and gauge
  • Ruler, measuring tape, or gauge checking tool for accurate measurements
  • Five buttons, approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide

Pattern Characteristics

The reversible construction and buttoning closure make this cowl a practical accessory that adapts to different outfits and preferences. The stitch pattern's compatibility with variegated yarns means that even simple, single-color knitting techniques create visually interesting results, rewarding the knitter with professional-looking finished work.
